Sutro (1869-1945), was a prominent San Francisco attorney, well-known book collector, and President of the Book Club of California. The charming illustrations are printed in a single color with the animals and scenery defined sometimes by the color, and also by the absence of color. The chromolithographic illustrations mounted on wooden blocks, depicting various animals, including a kangaroo. Each animal block has descriptive text on the verso. The text for the kangaroo reads, "The Kangaroo comes from Australia. By the help of its tail and enormous hind legs it is able to escape by terrific bounds when pursued". With six columns and four rows, for a total of 24 animal blocks. The illustration of the dog is the German spitz; other animals include the antelope, camel, bison, duck, elephant, flamingo, goat, hippo, ibis, jaguar, lion, monkey, newt, ostrich, porcupine, quail, rhino, tiger, underwing moth, vulture, wolf and zebra.
