Not only is this a most charming book, illustrating native American flowers pictured with Hudson River, Pennsylvania & New Jersey landscapes behind, but an interesting work in the transition between hand-coloring and color lithographic printing. The book includes both processes, representing color printing during a transition period moving towards mass-produced chromolithographic technology. "What makes this book interesting is the fact that the plates show some touches of color printing; Lewis and Brown is one of the very early firms to produce chromolithographic illustrations for books" - McGrath. A set of educational teaching aids for introducing children to different animals, including koala bear, duckbill platypus, elephant, tiger, cat (with bunnies), polar bear, faun, skunks, Bactrian camels, goats, raccoon and chipmunks. Includes an impressive image of koala mothers with babies on their backs, climbing eucalyptus. 12 color offset lithograph prints of adult and young animals, by the noted American wildlife artist Jacob Bates Abbott (1895 - 1950), in the original publisher's large printed envelope. Abbott was born in Brookline, Massachusetts and educated at Harvard, where he made cartoons for the Lampoon. Abbott established his reputation for cartoons, illustrations, and watercolor paintings of animal life. OCLC cites a book, but this suite of plates; not recorded on Trove. Tales of a small summer expedition to study and photograph the penguins, elephant seals and the great wandering albatross of S. Georgia. By sailing in his 42 foot motor yacht, on of the smallest craft to penetrate the waters of the South Polar region, Rankin was able to visit and photograph little-known bays and inlets.

1890. A children's natural history published in the US ca. 1890. 13 pages, string tied binding. Each page has numerous fine chromolithograph portraits of animals, including the kangaroo & the platypus, recorded as a "Mullingong". Arbuckles was a coffee brand-name in the US in the late 1800's and published a number of these finely printed albums in which they would include a promotional page on coffee, in this instant on the back cover. A highly collected series in America. Front wrapper foredge quite chipped, with the bottom edge ruffled and a closed tear & slt. stain at the top; 1st page has sml. corner chips. Otherwise good condition.

Hamburg: Hoffmann, 1791. Hardcover. Very good overall. The third German edition of 'The Voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay' including an important folding map, not recorded by Tooley, showing the eastern seaboard of Australia, extending from New Guinea, New Caledonia, New Zealand and the Marshall Islands. The coast of 'Neu Holland' shows "Neu Sud Wallis [endeckt?] 1770", and Botany Bay and Port Jackson with "Sidney cove". Port Jackson and Botany Bay are exaggerated in size. The map, titled 'Charte von Neu Holland, Neu Georgien und den Lord Mulgrave Inseln', is not listed in Tooley but is referenced as no. 1791-16 in Perry & Prescott's "A Guide to Maps of Australia in Books Published 1780-1830..." Neither of the first two German editions appear in Ferguson, an abbreviated version of 86 pages with one map & 1 plate (Leipzig: 1789) and the second in Berlin in 1790. Plate Number 16, Volume I. Powerful image of a pair of Radiated Goshawks, the female sitting on her nest perched on a rocky outcropping. The bird's habitat is in the dense brush along the Manning and Clarence River on the east coast of NSW; it is the largest Australian Goshawk. 14 1/2 x 21 1/2". Trove 1899173.

The noisy scrub bird doesn't look like much, but we would consider it as one of the triumvirate of Western Australian animals, along with the Black Swan and the Numbat. It is elusive and only found in areas of dense scrub and overgrown swamps near Albany, Western Australia and has come back from the brink of extinction. It is one of only two members of an ancient Australian bird family, the other being the Rufous Scrub Bird (Atrichornis Rufesens) which lives in the rain forests of northern NSW & southern Queensland. (Dept. of Conservation & Land Management, W.A.). John Gould, the author and force behind "The Birds of Australia," is considered the father of Australian ornithology. The illustrations are mostly wood block, drawn from many other contemporary sources. The author was German who migrated to Australia where he became a doctor in Brisbane. This volume illustrates Lauterer's passion for the Aborigines and takes a full 90 pages to describe their culture, medicine and language. Large 8vo, (x) 482pp, color frontispiece & many black and white illustrations in the text. Original pictorial brown cloth covers stamped in black & gilt, slightly rubbed but still a bright clean copy in vg+ cond. Ferguson 11461.

UK, 1880. Charming chromolithographic illustration of eleven Australian birds perched on a branch, an echo of the Australian cricket team. Bright (1847-1896) was a successful English natural history painter. Bright also painted a companion picture "An English Eleven" . They are one of the very few separately issued lithographs of Australian birds published in the 19th century. When this print occasionally appears on the market, it is often damaged & faded. With the exception of a very faint mark in the right horizon, it is a superior copy, bright and unfaded with the card quite unmarked. 20 x 7 1/2" on heavy card, with printed title & details, card measuring 25 3/4 x 14".
