The albumen photographs on the front are: a portrait of three relaxed officers lounging in uniform on the terrace of a colonial building in India, captioned in ink in a period hand, "McBurn, Capt. Malone, and Hon.ble H. G. Gough". The two men at the left wear small round caps; the man at the right sits with one leg flung over the arm of his chair. The second image is a large group portrait of the regiment in civilian dress, including wives and Indian servants, at the colonnaded facade of an imposing building, captioned "XIV Hussars Group, Mess House, Bangalore, 1877". Below this image, an unidentified member of the regiment and his wife are portrayed in a charming pen and ink cartoon of the couple in a row boat, with a clipped photo of their faces pasted in. 1880. Four albumen photographs of Sydney, all with the Charles Bayliss blind stamp. Charles Bayliss (1850 - 1897), one of Australia's preeminent landscape photographers, who worked for years with Merlin and Holtermann before setting up his own shop in Sydney in 1879. He established his studio at 348 George Street; then moved to 335a George Street, advertising himself as a photographer of city and country views, often with people, and making views to be sold individually while also contributing images for albums. He also made remarkable 360 degree panoramas of the city of Sydney around this time. These four images are mounted on a page from an album, with handwritten captions in black ink. The first photograph, "Sydney Harbor, NSW" is a view looking over rooftops toward the harbor and tall masted ships moored and docked; and "Sydney Observatory", looking up toward the building from a lower vantage point; both with handwritten labels laid down and with the C. Bayliss stamp at the lower left. On the… Read More

Description:
1938. Very good condition. Two unusually artistic photograph albums filled with collage photographic images of New South Wales, the South coast, and New Guinea. Adorned with poetry, philosophy, wit and wisdom, and the author's personal commentary written in gold ink to accompany the photographs of a man identifying himself as 'The Vagabond', in his travels through Australia and New Guinea in 1936 and 1938. The author of these albums is unidentified except by his pseudonym. There are several snapshots of the man, who looks to be in his 50's or 60's, or lived hard in the years he's wearing. Several of the poems give us clues that he is an American, working and traveling in Australia in 1936 and 1938. "I've swum the Colorado where it runs down near to hell, I've been jerked around with many a locoed (?) cow I've mixed it with some tough Guys down along the Rio Grande But You ought to get an eyeful of me now. The Vagabond" The albums are inscribed to two different women - 'Bettie' in 1936 and… Read More
