Description:
Hubbell, Horatio. Arnold, or the Treason of West Point: A Tragedy, in Five Acts. Philadelphia (no pub.), 1847, 1st edition. Sml. 8vo, 3/4 maroon morocco over marbled boards, spine gilt, t.e.g., by Bradstreet's of London. 76pp. Rubbed along edges, 2 bookplates, but a very nice copy and an interesting specimen of an obscure American imprint bound by a venerable English firm. Despite the title, this wordy dramatization of events that occurred during the American War of Independence centers less on Benedict Arnold than on the romantic, unlucky Major Andre and concludes with his soliloquies. the play is thoroughly Shakespearean in its language, use of iambic pentameter, and frequent extended soliloquies. Little seems to be recorded of its author, who also produced a pamphlet on the state of affairs at Yale University in 1855 and an annotated edition of Euclid in 1861. One of the bookplates is that of Thomas Addis Emmet (1828-1919), an eminent American gynecologist, surgeon and physician, collector of…

New York: American Art Union, 1846. First printing. Very good overall. Handsome engraving dramatising Major Andre's capture. From a painting by A.B. Durand in the possession of the Honble. James K. Paulding. Published by the American Art Union exclusively for the members 1846. Andre was adjutant to the British General Henry Clinton, and is shown here in civilian clothes, his boots & hat removed, with the American patriot Hiram Paulding turning away from him with his arm outstretched in rejection, his other hand holding the compromising papers. Andre had negotiated the surrender of West Point with Benedict Arnold. He was hung by the Americans as a spy; in Britain, he was memorialized as a hero. Engraving after the painting by Asher B. Durand; the figures engraved by Alfred Jones and the landscape by Smillie and Hinshelwood. First issued in 1846 by the American Art Union. Copper engraving black and white as issued, 18 x 15 1/2" plus margins. Lightly toned, a strong impression.

Description:
London: Printed for J. Almon, 1776. Second edition. Hardcover. An early example of the consequences of refusing to name a source; in this case, a junior officer of the First Regiment of Foot Guards punished for refusing to reveal the name of another party to a private conversation to his senior officer, his struggle to clear his name by requesting a court martial on himself, the refusal of that request, and the junior officer's resignation of his commission. But there was a silver lining: Nugent (the junior officer) resigned his commission in December of of 1775 just prior to the Foot Guards being sent to fight in the American revolution. With an interesting reference to a Native American custom: " I accordingly waited on Lord Barrington and related to him my story; I confessed my ignorance in these affairs, and begged that he would be so obliging as to direct me in the proper mode of application for a court-martial on myself: his lordship replied, that he would borrow a custom form the North…

Description:
Paris: P. Didot, l'aine, 1816. Very good condition. This volume includes an engraving of the only authentic likeness of Benedict Arnold, the Du Simitiere portrait drawn from life, when Arnold was still a hero of the early Revolution. Pierre Eugene Du Simitiere settled in Philadelphia in 1766, became a large collector of books and specimens, and in 1782 opened the collection to the public as the ‘American Museum'. In the 1770s Du Simitiere drew portraits from life of the famous figures of the Revolution, including Benedict Arnold, who was military governor of the city in 1779. This Arnold portrait is the only one known to have been drawn at an actual sitting. Du Simitiere's engravings of the American revolutionary figures were first published in Paris, in "Collection des Portraits des Generaux, Ministres & Magistrats"; the portrait of Arnold was done in profile, facing right, and in the form of a circular framed medallion. The author of this account, Francois Barbe-Marbois (1735 - 1847), was a…
