London: Edw. Orme, 1813. First printing. Prints. Otherwise very good condition. Originally published in the Foreign Field Sports volumes of 1813. Martin Hardie in his reference work on English Color Books refers to this set as, "Among the plates are a valuable set of thirteen in gay colours, illustrating a bull fight." These 13 plates illustrate all facets of the sport. 4to, plate mark 9 x 7" on 12 3/4 x 9", some old brown marking visible in the margin on the General view and a few plates, but overall this is a nice clean set in bright color.

Signed in pen by both players. A full court shot taken from the stands with Perry in foreground and Vines in background. Description:
1757. Print. Otherwise very good condition. A pre-letter proof of a mezzotint by Richard Houston (1721-1775) from the painting of '"Blank", the Property of His Grace the Duke of Ancaster' by William Shaw published in 1757. "Blank, a bay horse foaled in 1740 by the Godolphin Arabian out of Little Hertley, by Bartlett's Childers, bred by the Earl of Godolphin." Blank (1740-1770) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won one race, but became a very successful sire and was British Champion sire in 1762, 1764 and 1770 (Wikipedia). Accompanied by a 1954 newsprint article published in the Middlebury Chronicle by Ernest Hutton describing 18th century painters and an image of this print, which includes the caption as it later appears on the print. 13 x 15 3/4", with no text on bottom edge of print, trimmed close to impression mark, left edge slightly ruffled not affecting image.

This weekly issue of the National Police Gazette has the back cover devoted to a photo of Fitzsimmons, and the article within describes the lively battle with Gus Ruhlin at Madison Square Garden on August 10th. The headline on page 7 reads "Fitzsimmons Beat Ruhlin in Six Rounds" with subtitle "After a Bloody and Gruelling (sic) Mill at Madison Square Garden the Australian Beat His Opponent Down and Out". Even though Ruhlin was 25 pounds heavier than Fitzsimmons, the article reports, in Round 6, "As they were at close quarters, he shot his right up to the jaw like a catapult, and Ruhlin fell on his face, completely knocked out". Description:
New Zealand: N. Z. Graphic Series, 1904. First printing. Ephemera. Very good condition. An early postcard satirically commemorating the Championship rugby match of 1904 between The Lions (Britain) and New Zealand. New Zealand won 9 to 3. The text goes "In the Rugby Foot=ball Match, played at Wellington on August 13th, between Britain and New Zealand, the Colony defeated the hitherto invincible Home Country team by 9 points to 3." A fullback postcard, stamped and franked in Auckland in 1904 to a young lady in Melbourne. At the base, the sender wrote "I think N.Z. people are even more one eyed that the Lion", referring to the bedraggled lion, who is wearing an eye patch. The 1904 tour was principally played in Australia, where the British Lions won all of 14 matches played, including 2 tests. In New Zealand, 5 matches were played, New Zealand won 3 of the 5, including the test match, which this postcard memorializes. Some minor dusting, o/w very good condition.

London: Pears Soap, 1898. A lovely copy of a famous and rare Pears Soap advertisement: we have not had this image for 20 years. Handsome chromolithograph of a young boy in front of a wicket with his bat straight to the ground in a defensive pose. Large chromolithograph print laid on canvas, 20 1/2 x 31 3/4", based on a painting by Philip Calderon, 1882. Beautiful 12 color printing, 3 repaired cracks into image on right side which are only slightly noticeable, otherwise vy good condition. This was one of a series of three elaborate chromolithographic advertisements for Pears. The other two advertisements were of African gray parrots in a cage & a woman & child with Persian carpets.
