(A significant Association copy in that it's inscribed by Morris Ernst, the man who, in 1933, represented Random House in its landmark obscenity trial, successfully defending James Joyce's "Ulysses" and paving the way for its publication in the United States. In this study of censorship, the "Ulysses" trial is discussed at length and analyzed by the trial's lead attorney for the defense, no less an authority on the case than Morris Ernst himself.).

The 1992 re-issue, in 2 volumes, published under the auspices of the Trooper Foiundation--State of New York to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the New York State Police 1917-1992. Both of these histories of the New York State Police --published originally in 1922-- are here republished in facsimile and bound in a grey leatherette. Both are solid and VG, with light spotting at the panels. Small staining at the fore-edge of "The Policeman's Art....", otherwise clean as could be. Octavos, 580 pgs. all told. Also includes a sharp copy of the publisher's matching leatherette slipcase.

The booklet begins with a printed list of the "Supreme Court Causes--Monmouth Circuit" and then moves on to printed lists of the "Circuit Court Causes--Monmouth County", the "Court of Common Pleas--Monmouth County", the "Court of Quarter Sessions--Monmouth County", and finally "Justices' Appeal List--Monmouth County". Under the specific hearing slated for each calendar date, the Plaintiff vs. the Defendant is listed at the top and below it the attorneys representing each side. The booklet is tight and VG- to VG in its perfect-bound, printed wrappers, with light staining along the lower-edges and a clean tear --and light chipping-- along the lower third of the spine. The booklet begins with a printed list of the "Supreme Court Issues" and then moves on to printed lists of the "Circuit Court Issues", the "Supreme Court Issues for Late Day", the "Circuit Court Issues for Late Day", "Common Pleas Issues", "District Court Appeals" and finally "Justices' Appeals to Court of Common Pleas". (The lists appear on each verso, with a corresponding page of "Remarks" on each recto, and each specific numbered hearing is broken down into "Parties" and "Attorneys"). The booklet is tight and VG- to VG in its perfect-bound, printed wrappers, with light chipping and several small closed tears along the spine ends. A bit of darkening as well at the lower-edges and a number of pages of "Remarks" filled in in light pencil. Tight and VG in its light-brown cloth, with decorative blindstamping at the panels and bright gilt-lettering to the spine. Light wear to the spine ends, very light fading along the panel edges, light soiling to the pastedowns and the preliminaries. Octavo, 311 pgs.

Criminal Court of the City of New York, 1966. Document. Very Good +. A surreal piece of 1960s New York history. The original transcript ("Court Reporter's Minutes") of a December 1966 trial between poet Peter Orlovsky and New York Patrolman Dominick Vetrano over a contested parking ticket issued to Orlovsky on August 16th, 1966 on East 10th Street (between Avenue C and D). Orlovsky, who's representing himself at the trial, offers up several convoluted --almost intentionally comical-- arguments and cross-examinations. Alas, he's ultimately found guilty and is forced to pay the $10 fine. The transcript, an 11-page typed document in its bolted official wrappers, is bright and VG to VG+, with light creasing --and very light staining-- along the panel edges. The trail was held at the Criminal Court of the City of New York, was presided over by the Hon. Morton R. Tolleris and has been signed in ink at the end of the text by the "Official Court Reporter" Natalie Alston.

A very well-preserved copy of this 1794 accounting of the trial for sedition of William Skirving, "Containing a full and circumstantial account of all the proceedings and speeches, as taken down in short-hand, by Mr. Ramsey, short-hand writer from London" (from the title page). Clean and VG+ to Near Fine, with its original text and preliminaries perfectly intact. Professionally re-bound in a scarlet cloth (with bright gilt-titling along the spine) over light-brown cloth. New pastedowns and endsheets, otherwise nicely preserved as it originally appeared in 1794. The contemporary legal reckoning of William Skirving (1745-1796), probably best known as one of the five "Scottish Martyrs for Liberty"

Boston: Hudson Printing Company, 1914. Very Good +. A tight, well-preserved copy of the 1914 1st edition. Solid and VG+ in its navy-bue cloth, with bright gilt-lettering to the front panel. Just a touch of soiling to the fore-edge and light fading to the gilt-lettering along the spine. Internally, very clean, with no writing or markings of any kind. Thick octavo, 406 pgs. plus glossary.
