Toledo, Ohio: Self Published, 1895. Hardcover. very good. 1st Edition. vi, 90pp. Octavo. Original brown cloth boards with gilt lettering on spine and front. Previous owners bookplate on front paste-down endpaper. Eight black and white plates, including frontispiece of author. A clean, crisp textblock. very good Dr. Daniel Caulkins (1824-1905) earned degrees in medicine, law, and theology. He practiced medicine in northwest Ohio at Williams Center and while fever was prevalent in the county in the 1860s, he never lost a patient. He also served in the Mexican-American War, and taught medical courses after the war. He began designing airships in the 1860's and tried to construct a flying machine that ran on gas. Many historians argue that the Wright brothers applied his theories while developing their first attempt at an airplane. 1895

Top and bottom of spine with a bit of minor repair. Foredge a bit foxed and with a bit of light foxing on a number of the plate margins. Boards a bit bumped and with slight soiling. A total of 200 full page illustrations all printed in photogravure. Overall a very nice copy of a title difficult to find in good condtion. very good Although there is no limitation we can assume this was printed in quite small numbers due to its scarcity. It seems the book may also have been issued in 5 portfolios as well. The quality of the plates is very good indeed. No complete copy at auction in over 20 years and then it seems that most copies that surface are x-library of which this copy is not. 1928
