Toronto, 1921. Very good. Ten 19 x 24 cm b&w photographs. Blind stamps on bottom right corners for Peake & Whittingham photographers, Toronto. One photo has a slightly chipped bottom corner. Photo of watertower has chipped top left corner. Photos of interior and exterior of buildings associated with Scarborough waterworks, or Centre Island filtration plant. The Peake & Whittingham photography studio was located at 159 Elm Street, Toronto at about this time.

[New York], nd. Very good +. 24 cm b&w photos on 38 cm cardboard. Each photo signed on bottom corner by Blechman. Povla Frijsh 91881-1960) was a Danish classical soprano and voice teacher, chosen by Gustav Mahler to sing in his Second Symphony in Cologne in 1910. Frijsh made her American debut in New York in 1915 and gave annual recitals there until 1947 when she retired from singing after 49 years. Her complete recordings are on CD. Acording to a 1940 New York Evening Sun article, she was "one of the most satisfying singers of song of our time." She was also gorgeous as these photos indicate. Photographer Blechman (1922-2010) took shots of many theatre artists, dancers and society mavens in mid-20th century New York. His archives are at the City Museum of New York.

Saskatoon: The Photographers Gallery, 1992. Softcover. ex library-good. 42 p. 22 x 28 cm. B&w and colour illustrations. Burgundy covers with gold type. Ex library with labels on front cover and inside rear. Ink stamps on first leaf. Spine a bit faded and corners a bit worn.

Montreal; Brooklyn; Perth, ON, nd. Very good +. 3 carte-de-visite photos and 11 cabinet cards, all b&w. Of note is winter scene, really a portable screen placed behind, with "snow" and sled as props, as well as a scarce portrait of identical twins ("Mother and Aunt Lily"). Most subjects identified, on rear or on front. Both Arless (1841-1903) and Summerhayes trained with William Notman. Arless was known for his photographs of Montreal scenes, sporting events, portraits.

Boston, 1904. Softcover. Good. 80 p. 17 x 24 cm. B&w photos. Grey paper covers tied with red twine. Some soiling to outside. Photos of State House, monuments, Commonwealth Avenue, library, South Union Station, State Street, Faneuil Hall, Harvard College, Boston Common, etc.

Aberdeen, nd. Good. Two 19 x 29 cm b&w photos of scenery on 23 x 34 cm and 21 x 36 cm boards. Boards have creases, chips and stains. Only light markings to photos themselves. Captions: 1) "A bit on the road to Aberdour Fife" - 6411. GWW. 2) "A bit in Glen Tilt" - 2404. GWW. (The latter is a glen in the extreme north of Perthshire.) George Washington Wilson, based in Aberdeen, was one of the great early photographic firms in Scotland.

1911. Very good. 2 5x7 " glass plate negatives. Originall called the Lakeside, this boat was built in 1901 by the Craig Shipbuilding Company. An ad in the Sandusky, Ohio Register for August 10, 1908 provides prices for round trips from Sandusky to Cleveland or Detroit, about $13.50 or $20 in today's money. In 1911, the steamer was renamed Olcott, chartered by the Buffalo, Lockport and Rochester Transit Company to ferry passengers from Olcott, NY to Toronto. In 1916 the boat was sold to the French government and never returned to the Great Lakes.

Ottawa, 1884. Very good. 1) 9 cm b&w photo of James Wilson on 10.5 cm card. Bottom signed J. Wilson/84. Rear has handwritten note "James Wilson (Artist)." Photo by Topley, 104 Sparks St. Ottawa, Photographer by appointment to Marquis of Lorne and HRH Princess Louise. 2) 14 cm b&w photo on 17 cm card. Blind stamp at bottom for J. D. Wallis, Ottawa. Rear note "Miss Wilson, sister of James Wilson (Artist)." Artist and art dealer James Wilson (1855-1932) played an important part in Ottawa's art scene, as both a painter and proprietor of an art gallery featuring Ottawa artists. From 1883 until 1931, Wilson submitted paintings to RCAA exhibitons.

Mostly dated 1933-34. Fair. 21 13x18 b&w prints, one 13x20 cm print. Some wear to photo edges. "Alliston" in pencil on rear of one. One has corner chipped off, a few have holes punched through corners.

ca. 1908. Very good. 22 14 x 9 cm postcards. 3 are cyanotypes (blue). 8 have descriptive notes in ink. One has inscripton on rear. Two Guelph & Goderich R.P.O. cancels. Photos faded. Guelph and Goderich Railway was a railway in southern Ontario, Canada. It came about from a desire for a connection from Guelph to the harbour at Goderich on Lake Huron. Abandoned by the C.P.R. in 1988. Some portions have been opened as the G2G Rail Trail, a recreational trail for use by walkers, hikers and bikers. A railway post office (RPO) was a railroad car that was normally operated in passenger service as a means to sort mail en route, in order to speed delivery.

nd. Good. Three 21 x 26 cm b&w photos identified as Glen Gray on drum. Drum player identified on rear as Jackie Metts. Other photos feature unidentified piano and base players. Glenn Gray Knoblauch, known professionally as Glen Gray, was an American jazz saxophonist and leader of the Casa Loma Orchestra. Photos do not seem to be of Gray himself, who usually wore a moustache.

New Nork, nd. 1880s. Very good. 2 b&w photos by Continent Stereoscopic are 9.5 x 14 cm on 11 x 17 cm cards. One is titled "The Indian Pueblo of La Guna, New Mexico." Other, numbered 1305, is labelled "the oldest house in Santa Fe." Other two photos are 11 x 16.5 cm on slightly larger cards. One is labeled on rear "Santa Fe N. Mex. business street 1884". Continent Stereoscopic was a major publisher of pirated and copied negatives, as well as a few original photos. Operating in New York ca. 1870-1890, they produced mainly Western scenes.

Sackville, NB, 1976. Booklet. Near fine. [16 p.]. 23 cm. 5 b&w photos, one by each photographer: Robert Bourdeau; Lynne Cohen; Charles Gagnon; Tom Gibson; Marianna Knottenbelt. Short bios at rear. Stapled white covers.

nd. Good. Five 21 x 26 cm b&w photos identified as Lionel Hampton in pencil on rear. Various musical instruments being played.

ca. 1900-1910. Folder. Good. 50 loose plates. 25 x 32 cm folder. Includes title plate and 49 b&w plates featuring photographs of Warsaw. Each plate 24 x 30 cm with actual photo size 18 x 25 cm. Photographs are held in a faded blue-green folder. Folder has tears and chips and the front flap is detached. Inscription on reverse of title plate. Plates are clean with no apparent wear from age. An important photo essay capturing the architecture of Warsaw prior to the destruction wrought by WWII when most of the buildings depicted in this folder were destroyed. By 1945, 85% of the buildings in the city were razed, including almost 1000 historical buildings, 25 churches, the National Library, the University and most of the monuments. The views in this folder offer a fantastic glimpse back in time, before the city was decimated, and allow us to remember the beauty of pre-war Warsaw. Each view is captioned in English, German, Russian, French and Polish.

ca. 1929-30. Very good. 8 x 8 cm colour slides. 3 views of outside, 3 views of inside. R101 was a British rigid airship completed in 1929 as part of a British government programme to develop civil airships capable of service on long-distance routes. When built, it was the world's largest flying craft at 731 ft in length, and it was not surpassed by another hydrogen-filled rigid airship until the Hindenburg flew seven years later. The crash of R101 effectively ended British airship development, and was one of the worst airship accidents of the 1930s. The loss of life was more than the 36 killed in the highly public Hindenburg disaster of 1937.

Ipswich: J. Haddock, Bookseller, Ancient House, ca. 1870. Near fine. 5.5 x 9 cm illustrations on 6 x 11 cm cards. 6 photos and 1 drawing. All identified by yellow labels on rear or print directly on card. Drawing is of Ancient House, Ipswich, date 1567. Ipswich Public Library, Instituted 1791. Occupant J. Haddock, Bookseller, Printer, and Stationer. The photos are: Gateway to Wolsey's College, Ipswich; Queen Elizabeth's School; Christ Church Park (The residence of T. N. Fonnereau); View in The Arboretum; St. Matthews Church; New Town Hall (foundation stone laid April 18, 1866 by E. Goddard, Mayor, opened Jan. 29, 1868 by J. P. Cobbold, Mayor, architects Messrs. Bellamy and Hardy of Lincoln and builder Mr. E. Gibbons of Ipswich). One or two small spots.

1931. Very good. 78 photos of New Zealand, one in colour, the rest in b&w. Professionally printed with titles on bottom, eg. Pastoral scene at Kaikoura, Fox Glacier and Douglas Peak 10107 ft., etc. Many feature scenes of the ruins of Napier after the earthquake and fire of that year. Colour photo is that of "Gazing Globe, Marine Parade, Napier, N.Z. by A. B. Hurst & Son, Photographer. Photos are 7 x 9 cm. Some photos have marks from being previously attached by corners to an album.

ca. 1880. Very good. 12 x 18 cm stereocards. Card rears are stamped The Treadwell Collection with small ink notations. We think these photos were taken of Humberstone after a storm has damaged seaside structures in the 1800s. No manufacturer or photographer identified. Shows damage to Thomas Brady's establishment near the pier, damaged homes, sailboats in harbour by railroad tracks, etc. Theories welcome.
