Story, W. W. Graffiti D'Italia. New York: Charles Scribner & Co., 1868. First Edition. 8vo. 412 pp. Hardcover, no dust jacket. Good hardcover bound in brown cloth with Story's monogram in gilt on cover, with black and gilt lines and gilt title and author on spine. There is wear and some fraying at the corners and edges. The inside hinges have cracked, but the super is holding. Previous owner's book plate on front pastedown. Text is clean, but there are a few stray pencil marks on first and last pages.William Wetmore Story was the son of Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story of Massachusetts. After becoming a sculptor and rejecting the law, WW Story moved to Italy. A contemporary of Nathaniel Hawthorne and the Brownings, Story wrote the poems in this volume as dramatic pieces in the voice of historical personages or fictitious characters.

Finally Liu expands on the poetry with theories on Chinese poetry, specifically Li's language and his meaning to a Western reader.
