Description:
In this stirring book, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence--when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.
Based on extensive research in both American and British archives, 1776 is a powerful drama written with extraordinary narrative vitality. It is the story of Americans in the ranks, men of every shape, size, and color, farmers, schoolteachers, shoemakers, no-accounts, and mere boys turned soldiers. And it is the story of the King's men, the British commander, William Howe, and his highly disciplined redcoats who looked on their rebel foes with contempt and fought with a valor too little known.
Here also is the Revolution as experienced by American Loyalists, Hessian mercenaries, politicians, preachers, traitors, spies,… Read More

From the Introduction: "This history is a panoramic view of the last hundred years as seen through the eyes of that keen and concerned observer of society - the advertiser. In presentations of food, clothing, housing, cigarettes, cosmetics, liquor, new inventions, travel, sport, art, and entertainment, we see how we have looked, lived, and thought from the days of the gaslit cafe to those of the disco, from the early years of automobiling, 'floating hotels', and experimental aircraft to the age of space and computers."Condition: Very Good. Cover has slight soft crease on front and back and very minimal edge/corner wear. Otherwise clean and tight. Beautiful and varied images. From the front dust jacket flap: "...United States had three brilliant commanders, Rogers, Decatur, and Hull, and it was their job to keep the Constitution, the President, and the one or two other ships that made up the entire U.S. fleet busy harassing the British until a United States Navy could be built. Congress limited the great ship designer, Joshua Humphreys, to build ships no larger than frigates - with the result that he made them the best in the world and the frigate became the fighting cock of the sea."Book: Very Good- condition. Description:
From the front DJ flap: "In this spellbinding new history of the Civil War, David Goldfield crafts the first major reinterpretation of the conflict - its causes and costs - since James M. McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom. Where past scholars have limned the war as a triumph of freedom, Goldfield sees it as America's greatest failure: a breakdown caused by the infusion of evangelical religion into the public sphere. As the Second Great Awakening surged through the nation, political questions became matters of good and evil - differences serious enough to kill and die for."
"The price of the war was horrific, but...it made the United States one nation and eliminated the divisive presence of slavery."
The narrative is from the 1830's to the end of Reconstruction.
