From the back cover: "In the years following the Louisiana Purchase, George Sibley stood at the forefront of American expansion to the West. As Chief Indian Factor for the United States at Fort Osage, he represented the critical hinge between the Upper Missouri River and the growning merchant town of St. Louis." This book contains the writings and correspondence of this pioneer owned by Lindenwood University, which Sibley and his wife Mary founded in 1827. It provides an eyewitness account of American expansion, relations between Native American tribes and with the United States government in Missouri and beyond, and the transformation of the Missouri Territory from a region where Native Americans, early settlers, and fur traders all lived into a growing state."Near Fine condition.
