Description:
This is volume one of The Liberation Trilogy.
From back cover:
The LIBERATION OF EUROPE AND THE DESTRUCTION OF THE THIRD REICH is an epic story of courage and calamity, of miscalculation and enduring triumph. In this first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern reader can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943.
Opening with the daring amphibious invasion in November 1942, An Army at Dawn follow the American and British armies as they fight the French in Morocco and Algeria, and then take on the Germans and Italians in Tunisia. Battle by battle, an inexperienced and often poorly led army gradually becomes a superb fighting force. At the center of the tale are the extraordinary but flawed commanders who come to dominate the battlefield: Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, Montgomery, and Rommel.
Brilliantly researched, rich with new material and surprising insights, Atkinson's vivid… Read More

Description:
The work of a fifth-century B.C. heir to the knowledge amassed by a clan of experts of arms and fighting, The Art of War is one of the most useful books ever written on leading with wisdom. Sun Tzu's terse but probing aphorisms come down to us throught the millennia as a practical guide to achieving success by coming to a deeper understanding of the nature of conflict. The Art of War is an essential tool for modern corporate warriors battling to gain the advantage in the boardroom and for anyone looking for advice on how to gain the upper hand in confrontations and competitions.
Here Lionel Giles's famed 1910 translation, laced with commentary from the most illustrious names in Chinese military and historical literature, is brought up to date for today's readers. Excerpts from the work of Western writers and thinkers, ancient and modern--generals, poets, political leaders, and other observers--expand on points made by the master. Description:
From DJ flap: "'You engage, and then you wait and see' - so Napoleon characterized his art of war. The greatest general of his day was a scrambler who never had a plan, strategic or tactical, that did not break down or change the necessity in the field. He was the master of the broken play, so confident of his ability to improvise, cover his own mistakes, and capitalize on those of his enemies that he repeatedly plunged his armies into uncertain, seemingly desperate situations, only to emerge victorious, 'blundering' to glory." Book - Very Good condition. Black & red cover with white text on spine. A couple dents near the spine, otherwise minimal wear. Text is clean and binding is tight. Dust Jacket - Good condition. A few bumps and light rubbing. Back has small closed tears at both top corners and one on the bottom at spine. There is also a tiny chip at the spine. "This book is a facsimile reproduction of a naturalist's diary for the year 1906. Edith Holden recorded in words and paintings the flora and fauna of the British countryside through the changing seasons of the year."
Printed on heavier than normal paper (cardstock?) in a buff color with beautiful color illustrations, possibly suitable for framing.
Book & Dust Jacket - Good condition. Yellow cloth over boards with gold gilt title in brown block on spine. Apparently, this book came in contact with some liquid at some point as there are very light stains on the book covers and slightly darker stains on the inside and outside of the dust jacket. The top of the DJ at spine shows wear including a .5" closed tear. The spine appears lighter in color, so may have some fading. The closed book page edges also show evidence of liquid stains; however, the inside pages do not show any stains. There are no odd smells. The text is clean and the binding is tight. A good reading and informative book.

Description:
From the back cover:
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupoted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in twenty-four weeks than AIDS has killed in twenty-four years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease. Magisterial in its breadth of perspective and depth of research, The Great Influenza weaves together multiple narratives, with characters ranging from William Welch, founder of the Johns Hopkins Medical School, to John D. Rockefeller and Woodrow Wilson. Ultimately a tale of triumph amid tragedy, this crisis provides us with a precise and sobering model as we confront the epidemics looming on our own horizon.

Description:
From internal dust jacket:
For most of it's history, Scotland was a small, impoverished country with a reputation for violence, ignorance, and superstition. But suddenly, in the 18th century, it transformed itself into an intellectual superpower, providing the world with some of its greatest philosophers, architects, scientists, and men of letters. How did this remarkable phenomenon occur?
In How the Scots Invented the Modern World, Arthur Herman unravels the mystery of how Scotland quickly went from almost medieval levels of poverty and oppression to the highest literacy rate in Europe. Combining a seamless historical narrative with an impressive accumulation of evidence, Herman shows how Scotland provided Western civilization with some of its most enduring ideals, including democracy, free speech, equal opportunity, and universal education. The Scots, Herman writes, are the true inventors of the modern social sciences, including anthropology, history, sociology, and economics.
