Boldly inscribed in black ink below the photo and signed "W. F. Bringle / Admiral US Navy". There is some minor soiling to the mount & its corners are slightly bumped. Near fine The photograph was taken at the Naval Photographic Center, Naval Station, Washington, DC and shows Bringle at waist length in full uniform with numerous medals.The inscription reads: "Honorable Seymour Halpern - / With very best wishes and respect / W. A piece has been excised from the top corner of the title page. 1 plate is loose & has been reattached with 2 pieces of scotch tape. The endpapers are darkened & there is occasional light staining. A few bottom page corners are lightly creased. Good. First edition.The book includes personal narratives relating to naval and submarine operations in World War I. Also included are indexes of vessels and of persons. The text is in Dutch.

There are some small stains to the front panel with 2 pencil notations, one of them heavily crossed out in blue pencil. Each chapter is separately paginated. There is a pencil notation & offsetting to the pastedowns. There are a very few underlinings in the text. Illustrated in black & white with 2 folding charts, photographic illustrations, graphs & diagrams. Very good in a fair dust wrapper.

Two previous early owner's names are penned on the recto and verso of the front endpaper. There is some occasional scattered foxing and also some slight specks present at the edges of the last few leaves. Good. <p>First edition of this SCARCE French Naval Biography.

The label is rubbed & chipped with a strip of paper adhering to its top edge. xi & 364 pages. There are stamps on the half- title & page 1 & 2 stamps & a red ink notation on the title page. 1 name in the index is underlined & there is scattered foxing. The book is cocked. Good. <p>The text is in French.

Good. - Letter penned in black ink in an unknown hand & filling both sides of a sheet of black-bordered letterhead, approximately 7 inches high by 4-3/8 widr with the address of his family seat printed in raised lettering at the top. Signed "Brassey". The black border most probably references the death of his wife, Lady Anna Brassey, seven months prior. There is a small, light stain below the salutation with a glue mark down the right margin of the verso where the letter has been removed from an album. Folded once for mailing. Good. <p>Brassey writes to thank the Rev. J. R. 1930.. 1930.. Very good. - Sepia-toned magazine portrait, 3 inches high by 2-1/2 inches wide, mounted on a piece of cream-colored card, approximately 4-3/4 inches high by 3 inches wide. Signed in black ink on the mount below the portrait: "R. E. Coontz / Admiral, US Navy / Retired / 1930." The mount is lightly soiled. Very good. <p>The head-and-shoulders portrait shows the elderly admiral swimming in a slightly choppy sea.<p>Robert Edward Coontz [1864- 1935] was an admiral in the United States Navy. During the Spanish- American War Coontz and his ship the Charleston siezed control of Guam, then joined Admiral George Dewey's forces in the Philippines. He was Governor of Guam in 1912-13. In 1919 he was appointed Chief of Naval Operations. While wrestling with financial problems, new technologies, pressure from Congress and the naval fallout from the Teapot Dome scandal, Coontz established a unified United States Fleet and strengthened the CNO's position within the Navy Department.

Good. - A black-and-white, approximately 3 inch high by 2-1/4 wide portrait has been clipped from a magazine and mounted on a piece of cream-colored paper and then on a gray card 6 inches high by 3-3/4 inches wide. Inscribed and signed on the first mount below the portrait: "To Seymour Halpern / with kindest regards / J. V. Chase / Admiral US Navy". There is a piece out of the lower right edge of the gray card & its bottom left corner is chipped. There is a very small crease to the left margin of the cream mount. Good. <p>This head-and-shoulders portrait of Chase is inscribed to future Congressman Seymour Halpern, then a young autograph collector.<p>Rear Admiral Jehu V. Chase [1869-1937] was a career officer in the U.S. Navy. As commander of the USS Minnesota when she was mined in World War I, he was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for his seamanship and leadership in bringing his ship safely to port without loss of life. Newport, Rhode Island: United States Naval War College, 1965-1967., 1965-1967.. Very good. - Thick octavo, 8-3/4 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. Hardcover, two volumes each bound in dark blue cloth titled in gilt on the spine with the words "President's Copy" on the spine of each volume. The cloth covers are very lightly stained. The pagination of each individual issue varies from 40 pages to 158 pages. Volume 19 is illustrated with headpieces and a few maps & portraits. The statement "Mahan Library Naval War college / Newport, Rhode Island" is stamped on the front covers of several of the issues. The volumes have a very slight musty odor and there is some minor foxing to the top edges of the books. Very good.
First editions, denoted the "President's Copy" in gilt on the spine. The periodical was published monthly over a period of 10 months, from September to June.
