1930.. 1930.. Very good. - Sepia-toned magazine portrait, 3 inches high by 2-1/2 inches wide, mounted on a piece of cream-colored card, approximately 4-3/4 inches high by 3 inches wide. Signed in black ink on the mount below the portrait: "R. E. Coontz / Admiral, US Navy / Retired / 1930." The mount is lightly soiled. Very good. <p>The head-and-shoulders portrait shows the elderly admiral swimming in a slightly choppy sea.<p>Robert Edward Coontz [1864- 1935] was an admiral in the United States Navy. During the Spanish- American War Coontz and his ship the Charleston siezed control of Guam, then joined Admiral George Dewey's forces in the Philippines. He was Governor of Guam in 1912-13. In 1919 he was appointed Chief of Naval Operations. While wrestling with financial problems, new technologies, pressure from Congress and the naval fallout from the Teapot Dome scandal, Coontz established a unified United States Fleet and strengthened the CNO's position within the Navy Department.

Description:
Newport, Rhode Island: United States Naval War College, 1965-1967., 1965-1967.. Very good. - Thick octavo, 8-3/4 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. Hardcover, two volumes each bound in dark blue cloth titled in gilt on the spine with the words "President's Copy" on the spine of each volume. The cloth covers are very lightly stained. The pagination of each individual issue varies from 40 pages to 158 pages. Volume 19 is illustrated with headpieces and a few maps & portraits. The statement "Mahan Library Naval War college / Newport, Rhode Island" is stamped on the front covers of several of the issues. The volumes have a very slight musty odor and there is some minor foxing to the top edges of the books. Very good.
First editions, denoted the "President's Copy" in gilt on the spine. The periodical was published monthly over a period of 10 months, from September to June.
