Stiff card, slightly larger than 4x6.25 inches, with Powderly's portrait (a sepia photograph from the negative) on one side and text about Ideal Tooth Powder and Ideal Quinine and Sulphur Toilet Soap on the other. Plate measures 3.5x5 inches; his moustache about 1.3 inches from left to right twirl. Very good. One of a series of photo cards that were sold, or distributed for free with the purchase of Ideal products.

Casing is slightly edgeworn, else clean and unmarked. Biography of a very active Austin city father.

Edward Townings was a playwright, novelist, and poet.

[Milburn, NJ-?]: National Party, 1885. Handbill. 6x9 inch leaflet issued in the name of Terlinde, the Milburn-based secretary and treasurer, by order of E.H. Gillette, chairman of the National Committee, soliciting funds to promote the organization and its opposition to the gold standard. Faint fold creasing, otherwise very good.

n.p., 1886. 5.5x8.5 inch leaflet, printed both sides, creased and toned, with a long split along the vertical fold, going almost the length of the sheet. Calls on the reader to vote for prohibition. "The Knights of Labor are right in their declaration of principles, but they will never succeed while they themselves help divert according to actual revenue statistics, over $500,000,000 annually from commerce into the coffers of the distiller.

n.p.: [Democratic National Committee], 1884. Pamphlet. 16p. pamphlet, disbound with some tears at left, otherwise minor toning and wear. Document no. 16. Issued during the 1884 presidential campaign, arguing that Republican foreign policy was pro-British. Discusses the cases of American citizens arrested by British authorities in Ireland, including Michael P. Boyton, Joseph B. Walsh, and others.

Berkeley: University of California / Bancroft Library, 1978. Pamphlet. 39p., illustrated with mug- and snap-shots of eminent professors, softbound, a stapled 9x6 inch pamphlet; covers are faintly sunned, and front cover bears the author's signed inscription to "Ann," his editor. A very good copy. Professor Constance was tapped for an annual Bernard Moses Memorial Lecture, and wondered why, "knowing only that he had a University building named for him;" it so happened that Moses was a groundbreaking scholar of Latin America and that UC Berkeley was in one of its periodic ignore-South-America phases.

Boston: Edward Bradbury, Printer, 1883. Handbill. [4] pages. Edges chipped a little. Good. Pianist Amy Marcy Cheney (later Amy Beach) performing Chopin's Rondo in E-flat major and Moscheles's Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor. Beach rose to fame as a composer in 1892, and was an important American composer of the early 20th century. She was a founding member and founding president of the Society of American Women Composers.

Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, 1971. Hardcover. xxviii, 370p., hardbound in openweave blue cloth boards and enclosed in the dust jacket. As for the book itself, find light streaky foxing to top edge and one or two flecks to fore-edge, else perfectly sound, clean and unmarked; and as for the dust jacket, expect mild edgewear, faintly sunned spine panel, and an irritating little sticker at the tail. Bruccoli : "The present text is an offset facsimile of the first printing ..(London, Martin Secker, 1924). No editorial alterations of any kind have been made.." He states that materials toward a definitive edition exist, and cites university holdings of early Lawrence typescripts.

Cuneo, IT: Studio Garneri, 1870. Photograph. 1 photograph. 5.5 x 4.25 in, mounted onto board 9.75 x 7 in. Studio portrait of a person with a mustache wearing a military-like uniform whose lapels have harps, in a matching cap, holding a clarinet and standing amid fake ruins; a sheet of paper (probably meant to represent music) is propped up on a ruin that the subject is leaning against. Garneri Ippolito was a photographer in Cuneo, Italy active since 1870.

London & Clifton: George Bell & Sons/J. Baker & Son, 1884. Leather Bound. 204p., errata sheet bound-in, preface, dramatis personae, bookplate of Masonic Library in DC (withdrawn) some unopened pages, covers bowed-out, soiling to covers and endpapers, hinges sound, first edition of both titles (both later republished separately) in white vellum boards with red titles and device, top-edge-gilt. Katherine Harris Bradley (1846-1914) and her niece and ward Edith Emma Cooper (1862-1913) assumed the pen name Michael Field after writing under another set of names, Arran and Isla Leigh. They lived openly as lovers. Bradley was associated with John Ruskin's utopian project, Guild of St. George during her years at Cambridge. The couple died of cancer within eight months of each other. First publication under this pen name.

Washington PA: the Association, 1883. 84p., illustrated with numerous cuts of livestock (many illus. are duplicated generics) and a showy plethora of various fonts ("Jersey cattle! Poland-China swine"), softbound, a 10x6.5 inch sewn textblock in paste-fastened wraps. Covers are dusty and edgeworn with corner-tip losses, top and tail of spine panel are badly chipped, expect a few food-flecks as well as the flecking of inexpensive paperstock, which is slightly toned, a good (good-only) copy.

1898. Magazine. Entire copies albeit with ruined spine panels and ragged covers. Find twelve from the 1880s and three from the next decade when cheaper means of illustration quickly became the norm. A February 1891 number is the item already described as clipped (a single instance only from the ads) and in thrashed condition, but kept with this lot because plenty of interesting cuts remain. Plus the Feb 1898 number when half-tone had taken over articles and many of the ads. Haul 'em away to your abattoir. Nothing startling, much that will be good scissoring. The fifteen singletons as a lot. A clip-art bonanza, mostly wood-engravings that accompany articles and advertisements from the 1880s, segueing into offset or half-tone visuals as the 1890 progresses -.

Cincinnati: Standard Publishing Co, 1885. Hardcover. 313p., slender hardcover, mild scuffing to boards, else very good condition. Narrative of a Chinese seeker whose quest for religious truth leads him to the United States. Much of the text is devoted to lengthy debates between clergymen about the nature of baptism, etc.

London: The Royal Society, 1963. Pamphlet. Offprint: pp.69-85, pamphlet, staplebound in 10x6.5 inch plain printed grey wraps, inscribed briefly by author Thompson on cover. Mildly edgeworn, crimped and dusty, with author's name lightly pencilled on the otherwise unattributing cover and a date-correction in ink on first page of text. Good (good-only) copy, sound and cleanly within.
