Marcel Body was a French soldier and translator who witnessed the Russian Revolution while stationed there in 1917. He refused to join in the military offensive against the new Russian government led by the allies, and instead stayed in the Soviet Union and joined the Communist International.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1939. Hardcover. xx+348p., author's note, introduction, index, illustrated with doubled endpaper maps and b&w photos. Nigeria, the British Camaroons, France, and Spanish Guinea. Hardbound in dark blue boards gilt, and enclosed in the wood-engraved dust jacket. Awfully nice copy, massive undecorated blue cloth boards spine-titled gilt, dust jacket price-clipped and toned, chipped in places with a bit of dust-soil, an impressive copy. Egerton liked his stay, enormously. Dunno if he was entitled to share the eighty wives. The quietly splendid binding reminds one of Scribner's more ambitious period, before (as with the awful Scribner formula for the Hemingway trade), cheapening most casebindings.

Ann Arbor: The University of Michigan, Museum of Anthropology, 1974. Paperback. 121p., illustrated with numerous line maps and twelve b&w photos obviously taken by author Vinogradov, a female westerner accepted by this rather macho group. Softbound in 9x6 inch plain printed brown wraps. Faintest touch of edgewear to cover, this is a near-new copy: entirely sound, clean and unmarked. Anthropological papers no. 55.

The Wasteland, filtered through American demobilization and Pacific paradise, Sweeney, where are you. Lyric warns against French engtanglement: "So when you see a lit-tle, naugh-ty, French-y maid-en near you, Be sure to look away" --rhymes "cheer you

Cleveland: Bloch and Company, 1950. Hardcover. 61p., maps as called for exhibited fullpage and in colors (the colorwork is odd, perhaps a Bloch family choice). Hardbound in aquagreen cloth boards gilt and enclosed in its dust jacket. Book itself has badly toned endpapers, and an ownership bookplate has been laid over both dj and pastedown, fastening the one to the other (rear of dj is free, and we have inspected for flaws). There's some ownership pencilling near the bookplate, the dust jacket is dusty and edgeworn, item is otherwise sound and clean.
