Oakland: Committee on Education and Relief for Japan, 1947. Paperback. [16p.], bound with blue thread, portrait of Kagawa on front panel. Calendar booklet with text on each page about Kagawa Toyohiko's brilliant leadership, pacifist and anti-communist activities, etc. First panel describes him as single-handedly stopping a mob of strikers from destroying a dock yard thanks to the persuasive power granted by God. On another page he compares capitalists to steam engines and cooperatives to electric motors. "You were all right in your day, but it is past." Kagawa was a labor activist and missionary, jailed several times for labor activities as well as for apologizing to China for Japan's occupation in 1940. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1947 and 1948, and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1954 and 1955.

Tokyo: Futtowaaku Shuppan フットワーク出版, 1993. Paperback. 180, 18p., illustrated with cartoon figures, text in Japanese, very good reprint paperback in green pictorial wraps. The author was an internist for the Kinki area Health Center. The preface urges readers to not make the mistake of considering themselves immune while at the same time dispelling irrational fears about the dangers of AIDS. Contents include a chapter urging readers to get tested, explaining the procedure in detail and what the results mean; a chapter explaining AIDS prevention strategies (e.g. how "going on sex tours is suicidal," how anal sex is "strictly off limits," and how people should use snug Japanese-made condoms only); and a chapter on AIDS treatment. A substantial final section discusses the AIDS crisis around the world, noting how the disease has spread and what particular problems have been encountered in Africa, South America, Australia, the US, Asia, and Europe - and what these examples can tell Japan.

Author Iwata was a fellow in infectious disease in Beth Israel Medical Center at Albert Einstein University, also practicing in the UK and China. Discusses how American medicine is driven by the market and how money determines care quality; describes the AMA, CDC, functions of the Surgeon General, connections with academics, malpractice lawsuits, evidence based medicine, etc. Chapters on being a specialist of infectious disease and on post-9.11 US medicine.

Tokyo: 岩波書店 Iwanami Shoten, 1978. Hardcover. 753 pg. hardcover, very good; plain glassine dustwrapper is tattered. Text in Japanese. Volume 12 ONLY. Akutagawa was born in Tokyo in 1892 and became one of the most well-known writers in Japan. One of the most prestigious writing honors in Japan is named for him.
