Entries average 6 to 8 on a page, ergo some 500 distinct items with occasionally lengthy annotations. Covers show a couple minute stains and dust-soil, covers remain bright and fresh: perfectly clean and unmarked. Cummings' survey "is confined exclusively to books, pamphlets, etc., which have been printed in English or have appeared in English translation", and he makes no claim for completeness.

Also included are two heavily foxed issues from 1936 and 1939. French satirical magazine begun by Galtier-Boissiere in the trenches of WWI. The title is derived from trench warfare black humor meaning a combination of "the little toad" & "small trench mortar
