The story of Annabella Alexandrina Campbell Innes (1826 - 1914) who was born at Yarrows, Bathurst Plains, New South Wales. The niece of Major Archibald Clunes Innes, Annabella lived at Lake Innes House near Port Macquarie from 1843 to 1848. Annabella kept a diary (journal) and recorded her thoughts about life at Lake Innes House and the nearby Port Macquarie settlement. The house has fallen to ruin, but Annabella's recollections live on in her journals which are detailed and full of information about the lifestyle, people and events of Port Macquarie during the mid 19th century.

The author has bipolar disorder and is an artist. She provides an insight into what it is like to become mentally ill, to ascend into mania, free fall into depression, and finally emerge profoundly changed by the experience. There is a list of famous people who have bipolar disorder at the back of the book.

Most set a scene, and many of them involve the sights, sounds and colours of the northern side of Sydney Harbour. The author moved to Lindfield in 1970, and has spent a lot of his time in the Fiddens Wharf area. Today there is no wharf at Fiddens Wharf, although there was one more than 40 years ago. It is now a location on the Lane Cove River.

Jackie is Rita's daughter and their combined efforts produced this fascinating book about a very special Aboriginal lady.

Paperback small trade, good condition, maps, few black & white photos, minor creasing corner tips few pages,, tiny tear fore-edge of first few pages, minor edgewear. 175 pp. Geoffrey Dutton relates the story of Ernest Giles who in the 1870s tried again and again to find out if rich country or desert lay in the 2000 miles west of the newly installed Overland Telegraph Line, which ran north and south across Australia. He travelled across the enormous, searing distances of Central and Western Australia. He succeeded and despite the harsh difficulties he faced, went right back east again by another route to the Telegraph Line. Giles was a poetic and humorous man, and his own observations of both humans and animals were always original. He was never afraid of adversity, and capable of responding to the wonders of the world he discovered.

Hardback small octavo, no jacket as issued, very good condition, blue boards (gilt title front & spine), black & white photos including frontispiece, top spine little rubbed, autograph (author's written dedication). 66 pp. Michael Gourlay tells the story of William Henry Warren, who was one of Australia's most influential engineering academics. Born in England in 1852 and educated in England and Ireland, he worked in Manchester before migrating to Australia in 1881. He established the Engineering School at the University of Sydney. He was responsible for the education of some of Australia's most well-known engineers, and researched the properties of engineering materials. He died in 1926, and was the longest serving professor at the University of Sydney - yet the only university degree he received was an honorary LLD from the University of Glasgow. (Written dedication to Jeremy Steele, University of Sydney.).
