Description:
Brighton, Sussex: Clifton Books, 1969. Hardback small octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), black & cream plates, endpaper maps, faint foxing top edge, minor edgewear jacket (corner tips little rubbed, faint foxing reverse side). 152 pp. R. E. B. Duff commemorates the 100 year ago opening of the Suez Canal. The author describes the early attempts to forge a link between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. He then describes the Frenchman de Lesseps himself, and the political obstructions, financial problems and engineering hazards successfully overcome by this remarkable Frenchman. Although the canal was meant to be neutral territory that any nation could use in commerce or war, it suffered many setbacks, particularly the Suez Crisis of 1956. The author has worked for many years in the Middle East as a newspaperman and editor.

Hardback small, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), minor edgewear jacket (front fore-edge slightly rubbed). 209 pp. The remarkable story of the Yazidi women whose lives have been turned upside down by ISIS, and the man who risks everything to save them. Until 2014, Abdullah Shrem made his living as a beekeeper, selling wild honey across the mountainous Iraqi region of Sinjar. Abdullah turned his knowledge of the local terrain to a more dangerous use. Cooperating with a secret network of helpers, he smuggled women through the war-torn landscapes of Iraq, Syria and Eastern Turkey and back to safety, one by one. In this powerful testament of courage in the face of terror, the author tells the harrowing stories of these brave women and the man who refused to accept their fate.

Description:
Sydney: Vintage / Penguin Random House, 2017. Paperback octavo, very good plus condition. 256 pp. The Australian journalist explores life from the perspective of Arab women, both in the West and the Arab world, interviewing more than 80 women. The popular belief that all Arab men are controlling does a complete disservice to women who have taken ownership of their lives and trajectories. She explores the similarities and differences experienced by Arab women (both Muslim and Christian) in both worlds in their daily lives - work, relationships, home and family life, friendships, the communities they live in, and more. As someone who has a foot in both the Western and Arabic worlds, and with cultural understanding to address important contemporary issues in both, Amal feels equipped to do this by comparing and connecting lives in both worlds. This book aims to normalise Arab women and their experiences, creating a more empathetic response to the perceived other.

Description:
Sydney, Kensington: NewSouth / University of New South Wales Press, 2015. Paperback trade, very good condition, minor edgewear. 206 pp. Philip Mendes and Nick Dyrenfurth provide the first progressive book to argue that the BDS movement (boycott, divestment and sanctions) against Israel is the wrong way to broker peace in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Peace will come only when the legitimate claims to statehood of both Israelis and Palestinians are recognised - by both sides. The BDS movement has gained traction worldwide for a decade. But, politically progressive commentators argue that BDS is far too blunt an instrument to use in such a complex political situation. Instead, the authors critically analyse the key arguments for and against BDS, and propose a solution that supports Israel’s existence and Palestinian rights to a homeland, urging mutual compromise and concessions from both sides.

Cambridge, MA: Westview Press / Perseus Books, 2004. 1st ed.. Hardback octavo, dustjacket, very good condition (in very good dustjacket), minor edgewear, remainder stripe. 331 pp. Mark Huband, an award-winning journalist for the Financial Times (London), provides a panoramic view of the troubled Arab world in the aftermath of the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the United States. The Arab world's leaders seem incapable of initiating the deep political changes necessary to meet the regions problems. Furthermore, American adventurism in Iraq, and Israeli colonialism in the Palestinian territories, have added dangerous volatility to the region.

London: I. B. Tauris, 2003. New ed.. Paperback trade, as new condition, minimal edgewear. 248 pp. Vanessa Martin provides a groundbreaking contribution on the dynamics of the Iranian Revolution and the Islamist social revival - especially relevant in the context of Iran's recent elections. Political Islam and its recent violent by-products first came to international attention following the success of the 1979 Iranian Revolution led by the Ayatollah Khomeini. This extraordinary book is the first to analyze the ideological roots of an Islamic state as conceived by Khomeini. Surprisingly, much of the inspiration behind Khomeini's political thinking was influenced by Western sources.

Melbourne: Melbourne University Press (MUP), 2017. Paperback octavo, very good plus condition, minor edgewear. 182 pp. Australian Muslim convert Susan Cartland (a lecturer at Monash University) investigates the stories, motivations and challenges of a group of 23 Muslim women in Australia and North America who fight sexism within the Muslim community as theologians, activists, writers and bloggers. Far from seeing their faith as the cause of the sexism they face, they see it as the vehicle to bring about the change they want, and an important part of their religious heritage. Entrenched cliches and stereotypes from all sides abound but very little information from Muslim women engaged at the coalface of fighting sexism is available.
