Description:
Octon, France: Verdigris, 2005. Rothchild, Judith. Oblong quarto. (15)ff. From an edition of fifty copies, this is one of ten deluxe copies, which include an original copper plate and an additional mezzotint. Signed by the artist and by the printer, Mark Lintott, at the colophon. Rothchild's illustrations-two mezzotints, one of which has been broken up into eight fragments-communicate the pensive darkness of the writer's desk, laying it, as Bishop does poetically, before the reader in pieces and as a whole. Bishop's poem was originally published in Geography III in 1976. Her verses address the elements of her writing desk as if they were news events, as if they were soldiers on a battlefield or secret weapons or natural disasters. Her matter-of-fact tone and obsessive analysis of the trivial-the stack of papers, the typewriter, the inkwell-reflects a larger anxiety with the state of the world and with the way that world appears on the "real" news. Bishop questions, with no hint of forthcoming… Read More

Description:
Rio de Janeiro: Aloísio Magalhães, 1971. Magalhães, Aloísio. Octavo. 24ff, frenchfold. One of 96 copies. According to the artist's statement, printed on both covers in tête-bêche format in two colors, the contents consist of sixteen-sheet outdoor posters cut into octavo french-fold leaves, inserted at random across the edition. Magalhães's conceit revolves around the idea of reassembling what was once "informação inteira," which then become open to the imagination and whimsy of the viewer. Widely considered a pioneer of modern design in Brazil, Magalhães's work included the design for the first logo for Brazil's Rede Globo television network, as well as a major redesign of the country's banknotes - which incorporated a moiré pattern that made forgery quite difficult. In the present work, the printing resolution for a large poster allows one to see various pixellation patterns in the color separation, giving the work both color and texture, and therefore a mutable meaning - a concept… Read More

NY: Colorcraft-Brussel Publishing, 1969. Ockerse, Thomas. Square octavo. Unpaginated. On alternating black and white papers, Ockerse deftly uses paper cutting and varied paper sizes to transmute letterforms; K becomes X, E becomes F becomes T, and so on. A testament to midcentury typographic wit. Plastic comb binding with paper covers. Housed in publisher's box. Some bumping to corners, mild wear to box. Near fine overall.

Description:
Minneapolis, MN: Vermilion Editions, 1987. Rathman, David. Small quarto. (10)ff. One of thirty-five copies, signed by the artist at the colophon. Throughout, Rathman's linocuts, gothic and mythic in their intensity, evoke the nervous, even violent edge of the text. The present tale is inspired by and adapted from Amos Tutuola's The Palm-Wine Drinkard, the first African novel to be published in English outside of Africa. Tutuola based his original text on Yoruba folktales, and his style, epitomized by the novel, has become a considerable landmark in discussions regarding colonial (and decolonized) literature and language. Although Rathman's adaptation has smoothed over some of Tutuola's idiosyncracies, his linocuts conjure similar feelings of mysticism and urgency which are indelible to folklore. Printed with aid from Gerald Lange of the Bieler Press and Norman Fritzberg of the Hansestadt Letterfoundry, and funded in part by the Minnesota Center for the Book Arts. Sheet held loose in four-flap… Read More

Description:
Providence, RI, 1956. Hanf, Brigitte. Quarto. (ix), (15)pp., frenchfold. One of six copies. Illustrated with nine etchings by Brigitte Hanf, who has also rendered the fables into verse. With an Introduction by Robert B. Gates, which indicates an affiliation with Brown University. This appears to be a possible student work by Hanf, who was the granddaughter of German folk art maker, fabric print designer, and Holocaust survivor Moritz Wallach. Hanf's etched animal figures seem to take cues from some examples of her grandfather's work. Her use of a sheet of semi-translucent Japanese tissue for an image of "An Old Lion" allows the subject of the fable to exist on his own page as well as serve as part of the mise-en-scène presented in the accompanying poem, thanks also to some clever typographic arrangement. An auspicious beginning for Hanf, who went on to illustrate an edition of Beowulf in 1968, as well as a limited edition bestiary in 1974. Accompanying this book are four mechanicals and three proof… Read More

Description:
Paris: Three Star Books, 2018. Bronson, A. A.. Square folio. (50)ff. One of forty copies, signed by the artist, A.A. Bronson. Fifty identical tearaway posters of "AIDS," using an appropriative design based on Robert Indiana's 1967 "LOVE." The relation of AIDS to love, both conceptually and artistically, and its adaptation into a repetitive format similar to a sample book, points to the persistent threat of AIDS even as the crisis is declared "over." The book follows the tradition established by General Idea, an artists' group founded in 1969 by Bronson, along with Felix Partz and Jorge Zontal, which for 25 years was a vanguard of punk, queer theory, and AIDS activism through periodicals, public art projects, and low cost multiples. Both Partz and Zontal died in 1994 of AIDS-related causes; Bronson's present publication is as much an act of love and remembrance as it is of protest. Perfect-bound with a fabric spine and silkscreened boards. Fine.

Firenze: A. Pini, 1935. Quarto. A set of twelve sheets, unbound as issued, showing a variety of ornamental alphabets. Printed in numerous colors including red, blue, green, and gold. Several of the sheets appear to be printed by chromolithography, with exquisitely rendered colors. Includes the original parchment paper chemise, which bears the title with nine ornamental capitals in red, blue, and black. Sheets very slightly toned around the edges. The original chemise, which has become fairly brittle and delicate, is chipped at the edges and torn at the flap folds, one of the flaps having detached entirely; also quite toned. Nevertheless, together with the sheets, this is a lovely example of ornate calligraphic lettering.

Description:
(Istanbul: Ebristan, 2004. Barutçugil, Hikmet. Marbled paper with calligraphy measuring 23 3/4 by 32 inches. Ebru, or marbling, is one of the oldest arts in Turkey. In addition to being used in book binding and design, it was often used as a background for calligraphy and is considered high art. In this example, Barutçugil has used a stencil technique so that the calligraphy itself is marbled, in deep blue against a marbled background of blue and green. The original calligrapher of this design was Yusuf Coskun Beneuse (b. 1949). His interpretation of the word "Allah" takes the form of a flower and leaf stretching upwards toward heaven from a curled, grounded base. Bump to the lower left corner margin, which can be easily covered by a mat. Else fine.

Description:
(Hammersmith): Kelmscott Press, 1894. Burne-Jones, Edward. Bifolium sheet printed on both sides.(4)pp. One of 250 copies. The initial full-page woodcut illustration by Edward Burne-Jones first appeared in John Ruskin's The Dream of John Ball, and depicts, with suitable romance and foreboding, Adam and Eve after their expulsion from Eden. Both clothed in hides, Adam digs into the ground while Eve begins her spinning; about her legs are a young Cain and Abel. The rest of the pamphlet evinces William Morris' handiwork, with ten-line and six-line initials, vinous borders, and his printer's mark. Morris produced the edition for the Ancoats Brotherhood, a Manchester socialist society aimed at bringing art and literature to the area and to improve conditions for the working classes. The work's chosen poems by Tennyson and prose by Ruskin reflect these egalitarian values, calling for prioritization of humanity over earthly gain, and espousing the inherent goodness and Godliness of all people. Faint spot to… Read More

Cut in Resingrave and printed on Karma paper, the engravings collected here depict animals from across the globe in astonishing detail. Moser, as only he can, shows each creature in its uniqueness, its strangeness, and its joy. The toothy mule brays with slanted mouth. The bat shies away from curious eyes behind sleek wings. The platypus laughs as he swims by. Vance Studley's brief introduction provides both applause and context. Housed in silk-covered portfolio, which only shows faint sunning. Fine.

Santa Barbara, CA: Simplemente Maria Press, 2024. Heebner, Mary. Three quarto vols. Each one of fifteen copies, and each signed by Heebner at the colophon. A trio of Heebner's concerned meditations on the perilous status of the arctic landscape, based on two ship voyages undertaken in 2017 and 2023. In two volumes under the single title of Vanishing Tracks, Heebner mourns the current ephemerality of the polar bear. In Arctic Light, she narrates her experiences as visitor to and observer of the terrain, while impressing upon the reader how beautiful it all is, "more so knowing that it is leaving us." In Frazil: New Ice Forming, in terms both metaphorical and directly scientific she considers the regenerative cycle of water and ice and that cycle's frightening fragility. "Who will remember the ice?" she asks. Each book accordion-fold, with Heebner's prints throughout embellished by hand with pigment and ink. Text printed letterpress.
