Description:
New York: Drake, 1973. 351 pp, 8vo (8" H). B&w plates, 2 maps. "The first construction and widespread use of the railroads was the most spectacular aspect of the Industrial Revolution. The first railways not only drastically changed the economic life of entire nations, but also had a profound impact on the life of virtually everyone, young or old, rich or poor. The railroads helped to break down old class barriers and established new ones that have remained to this day. They radically altered the pattern of leisure in working class life, as well as the lives of the middle and even upper classes. The railroads made possible the growth of vast suburban areas around towns and cities, and ushered in the commuter age. In many ways, the railroads were among the chief factors forming the social structures of today's industrially advanced nations. This book by a distinguished social historian narrates the epic of the great age of the railway and authoritatively asesses its contemporary… Read More

Description:
London: B.T. Batsford, 1987. 210 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w maps, plans, photographs. "Under the governorship of Agricola (AD 77-84) the Romans extended their conquest of Britain to North Wales, northern Britain and, with the victory at Mons Graupius, to northern Scotland. In this thorough - yet eminently readable - reassessment of the literary, epigraphic and archaeological evidence, William Hanson shows just how this rapid progress was achieved and at the same time considers how far the governor himself was responsible for the Roman successes. The major theme running through his study is that the exceptionally full literary evidence, in the form of Tacitus' biography of Agricola, should not be given undue weight against the archaeological evidence - particularly as Tacitus was writing about his own father-in-law. Indeed, the book's conclusion is that, contrary to the impression deliberately created by Tacitus, Agricola himself was not a major figure of his day and his… Read More

Description:
London: Chatto & Windus, 1988. 239 pp, square small 4to (10" x 10"). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "Here is a richly illustrated chronicle of some of England's most beautiful houses, built between 1240 and the early seventeenth century. Hidden in spectacular countryside, often at the end of long, narrow driveways, most are privately owned. Some are lived in by the families who built them hundreds of years ago. Before Christopher Simon Sykes' work for this book, few of them had ever been written about or photographed. A medieval fortified manor, a timber-framed hall on a moated island, a seventeenth-century summer house nestling in a vast, ancient lime tree; winding turret stairs, mullioned windows, priest holes, Great Halls with hammer beam roofs, superb plasterwork, stonework and panelling - these are some of the many treasures (the author) has discovered and photographed for this delightful book." Book is slightly cocked, large gift… Read More

Description:
Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1999. 291 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "(E)xamines the formulation of British and American policy between 1945 and 1955 towards one of the most hated regimes of this century. The Franco question, though apparently not of the first importance in the evolution of Cold War policy, nevertheless haunted British and American governments during this period. It posed a problem which epitomizes the difficulty of dealing with pariah regimes. As such it highlights for historians the attempts of these two governments to straddle the contradictions inherent in the emerging dual system of the United Nations, or internationalism, on the one hand, and the older system of balance of power, played out by the superpowers as the Cold War. Set as it is in the domestic and international context, it also exemplifies problems faced today by individual governments and by the United Nations in dealing with questions of intervention or non-intervention in distasteful regimes." Description:
Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 2000. 229 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. "This ground-breaking study explores the treatment of the boundaries between poetry and history in three epic literary works: Spenser's 'Faerie Queene', Samuel Daniel's 'Civil Wars', and Michael Drayton's 'Poly-Olbion'. David Galbraith argues that each of the three national poems enters into a dialogue with classical and more contemporary predecessors and that this relationship has profound implications for understanding the English Renaissance. He explores the importance for each poem of various aspects of the relationships between England and Rome and the significance of the recurring spatial metaphors by which the territories of poetry and history are constituted, negotiated, and traversed. By presenting historically and theoretically inflected readings of the poems, Galbraith gives new interpretation to important problems of allegory and poetic… Read More

Description:
New Haven: Yale University Press, 1996. 396 pp, 10" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions, maps. "(R)e-creates the real experience of medieval warfare, examining how men of all ranks of society were recruited, how troops were fed, supplied and deployed, the development of new weapons, and the structures of military command. (The author) challenges many common assumptions about medieval warfare. He shows that medieval commanders were capable of far more sophisticated strategy than is usually assumed: spies were an important part of the machinery of war, and the destruction of crops and burning of villages were part of a deliberate plan to force a foe to negotiate, rather than an indication of lack of discipline. Sieges, often lengthy and expensive, were more prevalent than physical battles. And in actual engagement the mounted knight was never as dominant as is often supposed: even in the twelfth century, many battles were won by unmounted men. Written by a leading scholar… Read More
