Description:
Ottawa: University of Ottawa Pres, 1989. 237 pp, oblong (9 1/4" H x 12 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "The viceregal residences of the Canadian provinces mirror the idiosyncrasies of their inhabitants, and the tastes and talents of the architects, builders, gardeners, furniture makers and decorators who created them. In 'Ample Mansions' you will see the finest - and sometimes the worst - of Canadian style. There's no shortage of pomp in our viceregal history, but Dr. Hubbard's scholarly and sprightly text goes behind the scenes too, where there's plenty of room for rot and mildew, plugged drains and erratic staff. There are ample mansions crumbling from neglect, ample mansions consumed in conflagrations, ample mansions falling victim to political spats - and ample mansions rising in new splendour." Fine book. Dust jacket has three small areas of minor rubbing on rear panel.. First Edition. Hard Cover.… Read More

Description:
Toronto: Fitzhenry & Whiteside, 1982. 190 pp, 4to (11" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, drawings, plans. "The post-Expo era of Canadian architecture has produced works of international importance which have been recognized in European, Japanese and American periodicals. With almost 200 illustrations and a text written for the enquiring general reader, the authors have selected and presented what they judge to be the most significant projects from this rich and continuing period. Through an examination of the National Gallery competition of 1976-77, the authors identify the mainstream concerns of Canadian architecture. Then, concentrating on major cities from coast to coast, they look at projects embodying alternative movements that are suggestive of possible future directions, projects such as: Corridart in Montreal; Robson Square in Vancouver; the Pavilion '70 ski chalet in St. Sauveur, Quebec; Toronto's Eaton Centre; Winnipeg's St. Boniface Cathedral;… Read More

Toronto: Dundurn Press, 1995. 118 pp, large 8vo (9 7/18" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, plans, elevations. "From 1876 to 1915, Edward James Lennox was a formidable force in Toronto's architectural community. Many of his buildings are still landmarks in a city that continues to evolve. Born and educated in Toronto, Lennox looked to the past for inspiration but was never captured by it. His prototypical Annex house on Madison Avenue, Old City Hall, and Casa Loma bear witness to his technical expertise and aesthetic sensibilities. Through text and illustrations, this volume tells the story of a resolute architect whose vision helped shape an emerging city, and who in his time was called the 'builder of Toronto'." Toronto: Viking, 1994. 355 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. (A) brilliantly conceived and thoroughly idiosyncratic walking tour of Canada's biggest metropolis. With John Bentley Mays as our guide, we discover anew the places city dwellers encounter every day, travelling beyond and beneath the obvious landmarks to discover Toronto's metropolitan soul. From the unexpected beauty of industrial sites to civic icons like the Dome and Maple Leaf Gardens, Mays never fails to delight and inform as he uncovers the archaeology of memory that lies in the urban landscape." Not a traditional 'tourist' tome, Mays essays on some of his Toronto 'highlights' are gathered under the headings: Thinking Places; On the Land; Binding and Loosing the Waters; Tales of the Pioneers; Pleasures in Places; Modern; Shopping; Suburban Idylls; Concrete Dreams; Streets; Gardens; Moral Management; Moderne Variations; High Styles; Houses and Home; At the Edge. Sutton West, Ontario: Paget Press, 1982. 157 pp, oblong 8vo (9" H x 11 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "(Collects) in pictorial and narrative form many of Toronto's unique early buildings, their architect-builders and the personages who significantly influenced their development. The genre of building illustrated evolves from the early Custom and Registry Offices, through the turn of the century public buildings, to the Hotels and Theatres of the 1930s. Being captured in this volume are many of the long extinct and most of the virtually unpublished faces of Toronto, including the rare appearance of sections from 'Goad's 1884 Atlas of Toronto'. This remarkable contribution to the history of York and Toronto remains invaluable to the bibliophile and historian alike. Toronto: Macmillan of Canada, 1983. 132 pp, oblong (9 1/8" H x 10 3/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, reproductions, architectural drawings. "The magical buildings illustrated in this pioneer study of a virtually unknown architectural phenomenon were truly built of ice, and they were said to shimmer with color and fire reminiscent of sapphire, topaz, and opal. In style they recalled medieval castles, Gothic cathed-rals, Russian palaces, and Art Deco fantasies.
