Don Mills, Ontario: Fitzhenry & Whiteside, 1982. 192 pp, square large 8vo (9 1/4" H x 9 1/4" D). B&w photographs. "The immigrants who came to Canada in the ten years following the Second World War settled in a booming land with many new jobs to fill. The immigrants' reasons for coming here and their experiences in the new society were as varied as their own backgrounds. First were the war brides, some married after only a few weeks of courtship; there were refugees and displaced persons from e astern Europe and Russia; there were British and Dutch farm families, and thousands of others looking for a fresh start far from battle-scarred Europe. Then in the fifties came the Asians and blacks. Jean Bruce, herself an immigrant, tells through hundreds of in-depth intervies across Canada of these people as they fulfilled their dreams, and dispelled fears while establishing new roots. Ottawa: University of Ottawa Pres, 1989. 237 pp, oblong (9 1/4" H x 12 1/4" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, reproductions. "The viceregal residences of the Canadian provinces mirror the idiosyncrasies of their inhabitants, and the tastes and talents of the architects, builders, gardeners, furniture makers and decorators who created them. In 'Ample Mansions' you will see the finest - and sometimes the worst - of Canadian style. There's no shortage of pomp in our viceregal history, but Dr. Hubbard's scholarly and sprightly text goes behind the scenes too, where there's plenty of room for rot and mildew, plugged drains and erratic staff. There are ample mansions crumbling from neglect, ample mansions consumed in conflagrations, ample mansions falling victim to political spats - and ample mansions rising in new splendour." Fine book. Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1980. 164 pp, large 8vo (10 1/4"). 70 watercolors by E.J. Revell. "In seventy exquisite watercolours E.J. Revell has captured the beauty of plants found by early travellers in North America - from Ash to Wintergreen, Bittersweet to Wappatoo, the common Bedstraw and the uncommon Camass, the edible Fiddlehead and the ubiquitous Dandelion. Accompanying each painting are quotations from a variety of explorers and settlers, describing the plants and reflecting the practical, aesthetic, and botanic interests of newcomers in different parts of the country. The result is an intriguing mixture of native knowledge and frontier wisdom which provides a picture of life in a new land." Dust jacket has some darkening to panels and edges, minor edge wrinkling.. Description:
Toronto: James Lorimer, 1997. 166 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "Here is the fascinating story of the rise and fall of the Arrow, the legendary interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe Canada in the fifties. The Arrow was an unprecedented success story for Canada's fledgling aviation industry. It was conceived by its builders as the culmination of an impressive string of world firsts. Faster than any previous aircraft, it represented the leading edge of technology and an achievement of the highest calibre. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time and which remains hard to fathom even today. The Diefenbaker government cancelled the Arrow, and everything was destroyed, including the planes themselves. Nothing was to remain. Working from official documents, archives, interviews and a wide range of unofficial sources, James Dow presents the authoritative story of A.V. Roe Canada and its projects. He describes how the Arrow was developed… Read More

Description:
Toronto: James Lorimer, 1979. 160 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow (supersonic fighter) appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success, and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time, and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled, and everything to do with it, including the planes that had already flown, was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow, James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry, created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner, conceived in 1945 for Air Canada (then TCA). It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet, and was first in… Read More

This book celebrates this important artistic expression, a significant part of our heritage. Pieces are selected from communities across Canada: from a small parish on a Micmac reserve in Nova Scotia to a large urban synagogue in Vancouver; from the igloo-shaped chathedral in Iqaluit to a suburban church nestled beside a wildlife marsh in southwestern Ontario." Description:
Port Credit, Ontario: St. Lawrence Starch Company 48 cards (circa 1942) from the St. Lawrence Starch Company's WWII "Bee Hive Aeroplane Pictures" sales promotion, plus a flyer for "List No. 2" showing 42 planes and describing the rules for obtaining the cards, plus 1 shipping envelope, 7 cardboard dividers and 1 contemporary newspaper clipping. In the early 1940s, the St. Lawrence Starch Company temporarily suspended its enormously popular Hockey Photo promotion, introducing this series in its place. As with the hockey cards, the keen collector had to send in one Bee Hive Syrup label or two starch product labels for each picture - this collection represents a lot of syrup tins! The cards are made up of a matte card backing (47 orange and 1 red, approx. 7 11/16" wide by 5 3/8" high) with a b&w photograph (approx. 6 11/16" wide by 4 1/2" high) glued by its top edge. "(I)ncludes private correspondence from the battle and home fronts during a century of war and peacekeeping, from South Africa in 1899 to Afghanistan in 2002. These are letters that truly illuminate - that explore the deepest feelings and frankest opinions and describe the bitter reality of battle and the often appalling conditions of combat zones. They are the authentic voices of soldiers, sailors, and air crew; privates and generals; military doctors and nurses; heroic warriors and courageous prisoners of war; and their loved ones who wrote from home. This is some of the most powerful writing that Canadians have ever committed to the page." Small pen notation in margin of page 315, slight fading to bottom edge of spine.. First Edition. Hard Cover.
