"Frank Petrie, growing up on the island of Newfoundland, was far removed from the activities of the outside world. He hopes that the crude beginnings of international co-operation in the last half of the twentieth century will bear fruit in the future that races toward us." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Toronto: McClelland & Stewart, 2006. 332 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(O)n 1 July 1916, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 733 of 801 men in the 1st Newfoundland Regiment were killed. From their starting position in a British support trench, the Newfoundlanders had to cross some 230 metres of fire-swept ground before they reached their own front line. In less than a half-hour, it was all over. The divisional commander wrote of the Newfoundland effort: 'It was a magnificent display of trained and disciplined valour, and its assault failed of success because dead men can advance no further.' Well might the Germans refer to the Battle of the Somme as das Blutbad - the bloodbath. From 1 July to 15 November 1916, a period of just 138 days, more than 310,000 soldiers from four great armies, the British, Canadian, French, and German, were killed. The German death toll on the Somme was larger than that of all the Allied forces combined. The… Read More

Description:
Doubleday Canada, 2014. 285 pp, 8 1/2" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs, map. "When Andrew Peacock made the move from Ontario to Newfoundland, he thought he was kicking off his career as a newly qualified veterinarian with a brief adventure in a novel location. Turns out he was wrong about the duration - three decades later, he is still in Newfoundland. But it has certainly been an adventure. In his immense new practice - half the Avalon Peninsula - Andrew was the only vet for miles around, visiting patients (and their owners) on farms, in homes, and in the wild. A day's work could include anything from a Caesarian section on a cow in a blizzard, to capturing a polar bear on walkabout, to freeing a humpback whale from a trap designed for cod. All this is against the background of a domestic scene in which Adnrew's wife, Ingrid - also freshly qualified, as a 'human doctor' - shares the challenges of making a new life, fitting in to a well-established community, and… Read More

Description:
Toronto: Macfarlane Walter & Ross, 1991. 225 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, map. "(A) nonfiction family saga built around the Goodyears of Newfoundland - their move early in the century from Ladle Cove on the Straight Shore to the newly established town of Grand Falls in the interior; the deaths of three brothers during World War I; the ambitions and failures of the family enterprises; the Goodyears' bitter division over the question of whether Newfoundland ought to become a province of Canada. Through the meticulously recreated story of the Goodyears, David Macfarlane illuminates our past in a fresh and unexpected way. 'The Danger Tree' is about the nature of love, the pathos of war, the meaning of family. It's about memory and myth, loyalty and loss, courage and country. By turns funny, astonishing, touching and horrific, (it) moves inexorably toward its heart-rending conclusion." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, a few tiny soiling… Read More

Description:
St. John's, Newfoundland: Breakwater, 1997. 367 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, illustrations. "John Olds grew up in Connecticut, sailed on Long Island Sound, played polo for Yale and went to medical school at Johns Hopkins. As a third year medical student he went on a summer's adventure to an unheard of hospital in the equally obscure town of Twillingate in Newfoundland, at that time Great Britain's oldest colony. The summer's experience was offered to Hopkins students, as an elective, to show them medicine as practiced outside the metropolitan centers. It also gave them more hands-on experience than medical school could offer to a junior student. Most came for the summer and then relegated to memory their novel experience with the hospitable, gentle people, the chance to do deliveries and appendectomies, and the rustic maritime beauty of the place. (John Olds) liked it so well that upon graduation in 1932 he returned, bringing (his wife), whom he had met there in 1930 as a… Read More

This was done to give readers some understanding of the composition process and the changes which occur when songs and stories are transmitted from one person to another - these songs are historical documents and as such they enable us to learn more about the sealing industry; it is for this reason that the songs have been arranged in a rough chronological order. Douglas & McIntyre, Vancouver, (1994), Ist edition. 200 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "(A) memoir of an unusal kind: it is about one person's search for home, told in a rich blend of biography, fiction, history and travel. The search for home, for his heart's longing, takes writer Lawrence O'Toole back to his roots in Newfoundland, where he grew up in 'what is commonly viewed as a backwater culture'. He left it for Toronto, where he became the dance critic for the 'Gobe and Mail' and later the film critic for 'Maclean's', before ending up 'on another island, Manhattan', the place he now calls home. The search for a place where he belongs has drawn him to the bleaker areas of the world where people are poor and isolated - not unlike his homeland. He also describes his life as a gay man in New York and Fire Island in the age of AIDS." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling… Read More

Canada: Doubleday Canada, 2014. 339 pp, 8 1/2" H. "In June a few years ago I set out to visit some of the World War One battlefields of Europe - the slope and valley and river and plain that the Newfoundland Regiment trained on, and fought over and through and under.' So begins Michael Winter's extraordinary narrative that follows two parallel journeys, one laid on top of the other like a sketch on opaque paper over the lines of an old map. The first journey is that of the young men who came from Newfoundland's outposts, fields, villages and narrow city streets to join the storied regiment that led many of them to their deaths at Beaumont-Hamel during the Battle of the Somme on July 1, 1916. The second journey is the author's, taken a century later as he walks in the footsteps of the dead men to discover what remains of their passage across land and through memory." His journal provides insights into a pervasive sectarianism, the tawdry political world of St. John's, the rudimentary conditions aboard the fishing schooners, and the poverty of the Labrador 'livyers', the permanent white settlers who had intermarried with the Inuit. He provides fresh details about the lives of the Moravian Brethren, the first missionaries to the Native population, and comments on the wildlife, the natural environment, and the general disposition of the countryside. Curwen's candid remarks about Grenfell reveal details about the young missionary and social reformer not found elsewhere..."
