"Thomas Turner's diary covers a little over eleven years in the life of a man who kept a shop in the Sussex village of East Hoathly - a village some seven miles north-east of Lewes. When the first surviving volume of the diary begins in February 1754 Turner was a newly married twenty-four-year-old recently arrived in the village. When he stopped writing his diary in 1765 he was thirty-five and one of the pillars of the community. His bride of eleven years before was dead and so was their only child.
