Description:
London: Leo Cooper, 1969. 137 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "Brigadier Humphrey Gore, who raised the 10th Dragoons in 1715, and General Sir David Dawney, Colonel in 1969, each had a son in the regiment, as also did many of the Colonels between them, including King Edward VII, for such close family relationships at all levels were a feature in the Tenth, with the same names appearing generation after generation. Hence in a very intimate way the regiment has always been 'Proud of Their Man'. The Tenth has also always been notable for the Cavalry Spirit, that elusive quality, which has nothing to do with horses, implying light-hearted dash and daring, pride in discipline combined with independence of mind and judgement, the ability to assess odds quickly and take instant and correct decisions, enduring courage and leadership. It was noticeable before Warburg in 1760 in Major Davenport's letters. It was there before they became the Prince of Wales's Own… Read More

The outline of the story is well enough known: Brig.-General Hubert Gough and fellow-officers in the 3rd Cavalry Brigade threatened to resign rather than implement what seemed to them a policy of coercing Ulster into accepting Irish H o m e R u l e ; Gough secured a written guarantee from J.E.B. William Collins of London, MCMXXXXIV (1944). 48 pp, 8 15/16" H, hard cover in dust jacket. 8 colour plates, 21 b&w illustrations. "In this book (C.V. Wedgwood) has chosen, after a brilliant general survey of her subject, to describe the most important battles which have taken place in Britain - the battle of Hastings, Edghill, Marston Moor, Killiecrankie, Dunbar - up to the last battle of all, the Battle of Britain. The stories of these battles are fascinating and exciting and the qualities of the great leaders - of Harold, Rupert, Montrose, Fairfax, Cromwell, Dundee - are freshly presented within this limited focus. Most people have at some time stood on the site of an old battlefield and wished to have a clearer and more accurate picture of the historic event than his knowledge could command. This Miss Wedgwood now makes possible, and the reader of the book will look at Maiden Castle and the field of Naseby and all the sites of our historic battles with reawakened interest and… Read More

Throughout Marlborough's campaigns they distinguished themselves as steady, reliable fighting troops, and by the end had earned themselves five battle-honours. The long list of foreign stations includes Canada, America, India, Chitral, South Africa, where the Regiment's mounted infantry company played a large part in the final surrender of the Boers; and so up to the Great War. Twenty-two battalions were raised by the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment, battalions who saw action from Flanders to Gallipoli, from Egypt to Jerusalem. The Second War brought the Regiment glory at Dunkirk, in Singapore they lost a whole battalion, their skill as part of General Orde Wingate's Chindits was a source of bewilderment to the enemy; from North Africa to Italy they were an omnipresent menace to whoever tried to stop… Read More

London: Leo Cooper, 1969. 141 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "The Royal Highlanders - the Gallant Forty-Two - The Germans christened them 'the ladies from hell'. Down the stormy centuries from Fontenoy to the Hook in Korea Britain's enemies have called them other less printable names. But when they were first raised as a police force to keep the peace in the turbulent and inaccessible Highlands, the locals nick-named them (in Gaelic, of course) the Black Watch. And the menacing name has stuck. Their old 'black' tartan has stuck too, and today is worn by imitators around the world from Tokyo to Trinidad. It was the first kilted regiment in the British army, the original ancestor of all the other famous regiments that were later raised in the Highlands. Until Waterloo Gaelic was the language of the Black Watch, and it is still spoken on occasions. They brought the bagpipes into the British army, because the Highlanders refused to march without… Read More

London: Barrie & Jenkins, 1977. 240 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps, colour plates. "The Black Watch, since its formation in the 18th century, has been committed in so many engagements in so many parts of the world that its history is indissolubly intertwined with the history of Britain. The War of American Independence, Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, Quatre Bras and Waterloo, the Crimea, the Indian Mutiny, and World Wars I and II - in all these, and more, The Black Watch has played a distinguished part. In (this) history of the Regiment from its formation to its recent duties in Northern Ireland, the spirit, resourcefulness, fierce courage and regimental pride of The Black Watch can be seen throughout. Based on a multitude of contemporary records, diaries and memoirs and fully illustrated, this history was begun by Eric Linklater, himself a private in the Regiment in World War I, who had written several chapters and done much research by the time… Read More

London: Hart-Davis, MacGibbon, 1977. 190 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "The Boer War of 1899-1902 symbolized Britain's towering Imperial status and at the same time exposed potentially crippling weaknesses in her military machine. It marked both the apotheosis of her late-nineteenth-century Imperial expansion, and also its collapse. Like all wars, it promoted legends and convenient national myths and paid scant respect to the truth. In his sensitive and scholarly account, Denis Judd is not concerned with partisanship. He recognizes the extraordinary courage and resourcefullness of the stoic Afrikaner farming community who, against all odds, carried on an eighteen-month guerrilla campaign after the war seemed to be over. Dr. Judd above all deals clearly and vividly with the complex issues, stirring events and varied personalities that go to make up the Boer War." Cigarette odour, very light browning in… Read More

London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1953. 361 pp, 12mo (7 1/8" H). "Here will be found famous passages of martial literature, but in the main this book goes to diaries, dispatches, recollections and reflections little known or out of print. It is both an anthology for the general reader to dip into and a companion to historical studies. They start with the brilliant switch from the Meuse to the Danube which confounded the Europe of 1704 and end with Korea where again the world has seen the characteristic stubborness without display of ruthlessness or heroics - ." Pages are lightly browned, edges of text block are browned - small light stain on fore-edge, light browning to edges of boards and on spine,… Read More

Austin, Texas: University of Texas Press, 1981. 211 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Tables. "In her investigation of the social history of the common British soldier in the era of the American Revolution, Sylvia Frey has extensively surveyed recruiting records, contemporary training manuals, statutes, and memoirs in an attempt to provide insight into the soldier's 'life and mind'. In the process she has discovered more about the common soldier than anyone thought possible: his size, age, and general physical condition, his personal economics and daily existence. Her findings dispel the traditional assumpution that the army was made up largely of criminals and social misfits. Special attention is given to soldiering as an occupation. Focusing on two of the major campaigns of the war, Frey describes the human face of war, with particular emphasis on the physical and psychic strains of campaigning in the eighteenth century.
