Description:
Chippenham: Picton, 1987. 145 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, map. "The campaign of 1895 into the interior of West Africa to capture the King of Ashanti, Premph, and senior chiefs, was led by Colonel Sir Francis Scott. For this successful undertaking some 2,500 Ashanti Stars were awarded. Mainly unnamed and often detached from named medals in a group, this campaign star has always attracted a fairly high price but little has been written on the forces participating, of the march up country or the previous and subsequent medal entitlement of the participants. Written and compiled by two members of the Orders and Medals Research Society, (this book) is designed to be of interest to all interested in medal collecting and the research into the life of the man who earned the medal. This was the last campaign in which the British Army wore red tunics; it produced a long casualty list of dead and fever victims and was to prove a training ground for the 129 officer, 34 of… Read More

Toronto: Dundurn, 2008. 96 pp, square (8" x 8"). Colour and b&w illustrations. "For more than forty years Canadian orders, decorations, and medals have been used to recognize exemplary citizens for their outstanding contributions to our country and to the world. Although Canada is a relatively young country, it is fortunate to have one of the most comprehensive honours systems in the world. With the Order of Canada as its centre, the Canadian honours system includes the Victoria Cross, the Star of Courage, the Order of St. John, the General Campaign Star, the Canadian Forces Decoration, and a wide variety of other awards. From the honours of New France to the many British medals awarded to Canadians prior to 1967, the different elements of the modern Canadian honours system are explained. Rich with full-colour illustrations, this book provides an easy-to-understand overview of Canadian honours and informs the reader who has received them and how they are bestowed. Stroud, Gloucestershire: Budding / Sutton, 2000. 258 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "(L)ooks at each gallant deed that led to the award of a VC in the context of the war and the land, sea or air campaign in which it was won. In what way did any particular exploit affect the outcome of a larger action? Was it more difficult to win a VC in a jungle campaign than in a desert? What made the award of a VC for a submarine or aerial action different from those earned on the ground or at sea - for assuredly they were different. The author answers all of these questions and many other besides. (F)ully illustrated and includes complete transcripts from the original citations which led to the award of the world's most revered gallantry decoration." Dust jacket has minor rubbing.. Hard Cover. Description:
London: Harrap, 1981. 250 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The first campaign medal of the Great War - the 1914 Star - was struck in 1917. In October 1919, by command of the King, a bar bearing the dates '5th Aug.-22nd Nov. 1914' was awarded to all holders of the medal who had been under fire - i.e., 'within range of enemy mobile artillery' - in France and Flanders between the qualifying dates. Fewer than 230,000 bars were awarded. The recipients - and only they - were and are the Old Contemptibles. Their very special medal has come to be known, by hallowed tradition, as the 'Mons Star'; and this is their story." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, 11 digit number written in ink on back of rear free endpaper. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, several tiny/small chips and tears along top edge, light rubbing.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good+/Very Good-.
