Description:
1949 - 1955. Letter. Very Good to Near Fine. Exceptional archive of 15 pieces including 4 TYPED LETTERS SIGNED from Merton to his typist, Ann Skakel (mother of Ethel Kennedy); a wonderful TYPED LETTER from Merton (signed in type) to his friend and teacher, Donald Walsh; 8 retained TYPED LETTERS from Skakel to Merton; a TYPED LETTER SIGNED from Walsh to Skakel; and a photograph of Merton's ordination annotated on the verso by Walsh. Superb content throughout with Merton's letters, SIGNED as "Father Louis" or "Father M. Louis Merton," containing much discussion of his work, including forwarding the carbon copy of his manuscript of his new book THE ASCENT TO TRUTH (not present here). There are maybe a dozen or so holograph additions by Merton in the letters. Merton's lengthy letter to Walsh discusses more spiritual matters: "The fact that I get scared of Our Lord and have to trust Him blindly about the present and the future is, however, sufficient pledge of what one must expect. So I turn to jelly on… Read More

Letter. Near Fine. Four-page letter on a 10-1/2" x 8-1/4" sheet folded in fours. It appears that this is the last four pages of a longer letter of unknown length, SIGNED by “Lieut. J. Glendinning” to an unknown recipient. Much content including discussion about the 12th Army Corps under Union General Henry W. Slocum. In part: "All of the supplies from Washington reach here by boat and thence transport by cars to Falmouth opposite Fredericksburg which is 16 miles distant." He speaks of the variety of people--some happy, some sad--that he sees here: "Twas the other night whilst having in charge a detail of men working on the Dock, a lad came forward & wanted the assistance of 4 or 5 men to help him on the boat with a box-- he had been to Fredicksburg [sic] and was now returning with his deceased Father and this is what the box contained. Poor boy! I thought, how sad must be the home to which you are going." He describes empty coffins piled high on the wharf. "Nothing keeps me in the army but a sense… Read More

Description:
Quincy [MA], 1 October 1874. Letter. Near Fine. Three-page letter on both sides of a 10" x 8" sheet to author and editor George W. Curtis responding about a series of lectures being organized by a man named Carpenter. Adams says he has an aversion "to all the system of lecturing which had been carried on so systematically of later years.... It would be a great inconvenience to me to break off from the prosecution of my present undertaking, which will be likely to absorb all my remaining days of usefulness.... He mentioned your name, that of Dr. Woolsey and Mr. Schurz as within the perview of the plan. What could I say but that if gentlemen of that mark were ready to advance, I could not fall back?" Curtis, editor of HARPER'S WEEKLY during the Civil War years and one of the most influential American journalists of any day, also was known for his speeches, one of which was a tribute to Charles Sumner. Curtis also had the honor of helping Thoreau build his cabin on Walden Pond. Fine letter from one… Read More

Washington DC, 24 November 1879. Letter. Paper aged and a bit fragile, first and final pages slightly darker than others. Very Good. A six-page letter on both sides of three lined Headquarters Army of the United States letterhead (5" x 8") to Colonel L. B. Church. Sherman expresses his well wishes as Col. Church recovers from an illness, noting that "I know that in conveying to you this note of sympathy, I also can assure that the prayers of every member of that Grand Old Army, and of the millions they represent" will join him in hopes that "your overtaxed lungs may regain their usual health & strength." He also describes in great detail a celebration, noting the musicians and the tunes they played: "The incident to which you refer occurred at the Grand Banquet at the Palmer House Chicago the night of Nov. 13 when was assembled probably the most brilliant, talented, and renowned company that ever assembled in America.... Hamden, CT, 1930 & 1935. Letter. Creases from folding, otherwise Fine. Two early AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED (ALSs) to Henzie Browne, the wife of British theater director E. Martin Browne on 5 total pages, 5-3/4" x 8-1/2" and 6" x 8", dated 20 June 1930 and 11 June 1935. The earlier handwritten letter, in full: "Indeed I am very happy that you did write me your generous and encouraging letter. And I’m very glad that you were not disappointed in the book at that particular time: I’ve taken potluck at ship’s libraries many times and only once had a real deck-chair treat = Thomas Mann’s BUDDENBROOKS. I shall think of you two often again this summer, for I shall be at Peterboro from July 10 - Aug 10. Trying to write some plays. I hope some summer we can all meet again (with Christopher too) on that hill. Please give my regards to Mr. Brown and again accept my sincere thanks. Sincerely yours Thornton Wilder." Cambridge, 28 October 1958. Letter. Creases from mailing, otherwise Near Fine. A thoughtful AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) on both sides of 7" x 9" King's College letterhead to Professor [Rex] Warner. In part: "My glimpse of you yesterday reminded me that I had never ... thanked you for your lecture.... I am very glad that you cared to quote me, and -- still more -- to quote Dickinson. But it is a difficult wicket. I fear that sensitivity, the arts, and all that, can only be defended on the grounds that they are good in themselves. I don't write this high-mindedly. I only wish it was otherwise. The bait we hold out (I [?] changing my form of sport) is that the life of the imagination & the belief that the world is interesting, may in the long run make society and the individuals in it more comfortable. I doubt it."

(London), 29 September 1926. Letter. Crease from mailing otherwise Fine. A two-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS) on both sides of 5-1/2" x 7-3/8" personal stationery to "My dear Sir" [Vincent Seligman]. Written just weeks before the publication of Milne's most famous work, WINNIE-THE-POOH. This fine letter offers insight into Milne's sharp sense of humor and includes indirect references to his most famous book. Milne refers to a person in his letter as a "cygnet" (a young swan), a reference which may have been in mind as Winnie The Pooh was a blended name created by Milne, being a combination of the name "Pooh," after a cygnet swan they met on holiday, and "Winnie," a black bear cub he often saw at the London Zoo. There is also a lighthearted poke at his publisher, Methuen. In part: "I have arrived safely at the house to which you sent me, and think that I shall like the situation. I wanted to begin a serial story for the DAILY MAIL at once, but the man here said 'No, there's a letter we must write… Read More

Written to John Fleming, the husband of Kipling's sister, Alice ("Trix"), about Trix's mental health following her mental breakdown after the deaths of their parents, which occurred the previous year. In part: "We are just back from a trip abroad and I find the enclosed letter for Trix waiting for me here. It is some time since I have had news and I have not cared to trouble you because I knew that if there was any news to tell you would have written it, but I should like to know how Trix is progressing. Mr Macdonald has written me that Trix would like to have the painted fire screen from the dining room at The Gables [Kipling's parents' home].... A 2-page letter on two 5-1/2" x 8-1/2" sheets of Barnum's Marina letterhead addressed to Mrs. [Alice Graham] Lanigan and SIGNED as "P. T. Barnum." Barnum discusses a sketch being written by Mrs. Barnum and an unnamed neighbor (who might possibly be fictitious). In part: "I have thought you had better look over the article.... This lady in quiet conversation with Mrs. Barnum drew out the account of her training at school, & it seems a pity to strike it out-- Most of the description of Waldemere [Barnum's estate] might be omitted & then it must be left to your discretion to cut out what you feel you must do. I must see the proof & submit it to our neighbor ... before it goes to press. Mrs Barnum is a splendid writer. I have tried long to get her to write over her own name with but little success-- but she gives considerable for charity & might I think be induced to write for pay-- all of which she… Read More

Irving asks about his other nephew, Pierre's brother, Theodore, also a Reverend and author: "I am happy to hear that Theodore is making such strenuous efforts to prepare himself for the important trust about to be confided to him. It will of course take some little time and discipline to get himself into complete training; his desultory studies and readings have all to be brought to bear upon one pursuit, and in many cases to be followed out and completed....
