Folio (9" x 14-1/4") in modern calf-backed marbled boards with gilt decorations on the spine and a gilt-lettered red morocco spine label; [vi], viii, 503 pages. Complete with half-title page and list of subscribers. Illustrated with 2 large folding maps (Jamaica; Port Royal and Kingston) and 49 engraved plates, mostly botanical (38) but also including sea life and animals (11), after George D. Ehret by B. Cole, F. Garden, F. Patton, and others. Browne, an Irish physician and botanist, settled in Jamaica in 1746, working as a physician. J. Grandville. Two quarto (7" x 10-3/4") volumes bound in half green calf leather with gilt lettering and green marbled boards. Illustrated with 52 superb anthropomorphic hand-colored plates (including 2 title pages), 2 black-and-white plates, and numerous wood-engravings in the text, all after J. J. Grandville. Text by several contributors. Grandville was a caricaturist best known for presenting animals and flowers in human form and using them to satirize the French social and political milieu of his period.

New York: The Century Co., 1908. First Edition. Hardcover. Small stain at the top of the front cover. Very Good or better. Early but not first printing, which was in April 1907, of this title which advocated improved treatment of children and eugenic practices such as keeping the unfit and first cousins from marrying. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper to Jacob Riis: "To Jacob Riis/with the profound admiration/of/Luther Burbank/Santa Rosa Cal Mar 20th/1909." Luther Burbank was an American botanist, horticulturist, and a pioneer in agricultural science who developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants. Jacob Riis was a pioneering photojournalist and author of the influential book HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES, an illustrated examination of poverty in New York City. His work influenced Lincoln Steffens and helped to create what would become "muckraking" or investigative journalism.
