Occasional spot of foxing but generally clean and bright; minor scratches and wear to bindings, spine labels rather dry. Near Fine set of these beautifully illustrated and bound books. Eight quarto (7-1/2" x 11") volumes bound in full green morocco leather by Bickers & Son with triple gilt-ruled covers with gilt fleur-de-lys corner decorations, gilt-decorated spines with contrasting morocco spine labels, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Illustrated with 131 full-page chromolithograph plates as well as numerous full-page black-and-white plates and text engravings illustrating all facets of life in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Text in French. Each volume with the bookplate of Lovis Childs Madeira, designed by Walter M. Aikman, on the front pastedown.

Full gilt-decorated red morocco leather by Zaehnsdorf with gilt rules and gilt-decorated boards and spine; gilt dentelles and marbled endpapers; top edge gilt. Notes by Anatole France. Portrait by Louis Monzès after Devéria. In addition to the binding being signed by Zaehnsdorf at the bottom of the inside front cover, this copy also bears a small gilt medallic mark on the inside rear board, used by the binder "as a quality mark on the superior bindings produced by the firm" (Broomhead, Frank: THE ZAEHNSDORFS (1842 - 1947). CRAFT BOOKBINDERS, page 73).
