The first sixteen issues of the New Series of this important American literary magazine. These are special issues with loose quires laid into the covers. According to a letter from the editors dated 1990, included here, these issues were specially done for a patron who donated $100 per issue in exchange for autographed copies. A later note from an editorial assistant at the time states that the donor actually contributed much more than the stated amount per issue, more like $8000, and that only four years of signed copies were done, thus making this complete and the only known set. Nearly every contribution is SIGNED by the author, a total of more than 200 signatures, including duplicates, and including several winners of the Nobel Prize. Introduction by Toni Morrison and afterword by Meyer Schapiro, the only text in this absolutely stunning collection of color photographic portraits, mostly of street people, which Schapiro says "bring to mind some of the greatest painted portraits." Bergman created his own color separations, using high-resolution digital equipment, for these photographs which were taken with a simple 35 mm camera, amateur film, no tripod, and no special lighting. Of this, his first book, Morrison states, "Occasionally there arises an event or a moment that one knows immediately will forever mark a place in the history of artistic endeavor. Robert Bergman's portraits represent such a moment." Obviously, no light praise and well deserved once you see these truly amazing photographs that have the power to stop you in your tracks.

An undated early holograph version of Saul Bellow's only full-length play contained in a ledger-type notebook (8-1/4" x 11-3/8") with marbled paper boards and a black cloth spine. Bellow has subtitled this as "A Work in Progress." Acts I and II of this version are complete in 71 pages with 4 pages of preliminary material for an Act III, all handwritten by Bellow. The 1964 staged version was reduced to two acts. Bellow appears to have written out Acts I & II as a fair copy from previous versions and notes in preparation for completing the play with a new Act III. There are relatively few insertions and corrections in his text of the first two acts which take up about 75% of the notebook.
