Description:
At sea: Hillacre, September, 1917. First Edition. Manuscript. Occasional staining, some aging to paper, normal folds from mailing. Very Good. Nine pages typed on four 8-1/2" x 11" leaves of Hotel Brevoort letterhead and Scandinavian-American Line letterhead with Reed's name typed at the top right corner of the first page, and pages numbered at the tops of the following pages. With the original envelope addressed in Reed's hand, postmarked twice and stamped "Opened by Censor." Reed's important unpublished typescript was written while he was traveling on board a Danish liner from the United States to Norway during World War I. It was intended to be published in THE MASSES, but the delay in transit -- the first postmark is dated 3 September 1917, and received in Croton-on-Hudson on 11 August 1919, addressed to Mrs. B[oardman] Robinson -- as well as that magazine's legal battle under the Sedition Act must have precluded its publication. Reed begins his essay with a transcription of a notice that was… Read More

Description:
New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, (1931). First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good in a soiled, edgeworn, near Good dustwrapper, the front flap detached but present. Fifth Printing. Complete in one volume, illustrated. Superbly INSCRIBED and SIGNED by Steffens, filling the front pastedown, to wealthy Boston surgeon and socialite, Dr. Le Roi Goddard Crandon, and his wife, Mina "Margery" Crandon, perhaps the most famous psychic medium of her time who claimed that she channeled her dead brother, Walter Stinson. In addition, a typescript of a letter from Steffens is pasted on the front endpaper opposite the inscription which transcribes Steffens's somewhat difficult handwriting. The inscription reads in full: "To L. R. G. and Margery Crandon, & to/Walter, my old friends:/You, Crandon, you know all of this, you are/of some of it, as I am a part of your unwritten/Life, & of Margery's, & Walter's. That I may/say, may I not? And surely I may sat that/we, all four of us old friends -- we have looked/& looked… Read More

New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., Inc., 1943. First Edition. Hardcover. Small white paint stain on the front cover, the gilt on the cover and spine a little faded but clear. The dustwrapper is bright and attractive, free from any major defect and with only a few small chips. Very Good in a Very Good dustwrapper. Autobiography and first book by one of our greatest songwriters, author of this country's unofficial national anthem, "This Land Is Your Land." Quite scarce in the first edition, especially in a dustwrapper, this title served as the basis for the Hal Ashby film starring David Carradine. This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the legendary author on the front endpaper with the last line of "Talking Union," a slogan that came to be identified with Guthrie: "To/Ray and Betty/Lusk/from me/to you/Woody Guthrie/5-19-'47/take it easy/but take it."

Description:
New York: Printed for the Author, 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Slight soiling to the covers; the bottom of the spine lacking about two inches of paper. Very Good. Stiff printed brown wraps (6-1/2" x 9-5/8"). Issued in an edition of 500 copies. Though there is no indication of such in the book itself, this volume was in the possession of Louise Bryant, Reed's wife. Laid in is an interesting piece: a 6" x 7-1/4" reproduction of an unidentified figure on which is written on the verso in an unidentified hand: "In the world is a big place which is called Russia, and there is a little place, my heart, which is full of gratefulness and love for a little American doll Louise Bryant. And when Louise thinks of Russia I beg her to think of me ever yours." Following that is a name, partly obliterated, dated Moscow, April 1921. Perhaps the best known left-wing American journalist of the twentieth century; Reed was portrayed by Warren Beatty in the film REDS, nominated for twelve Academy Awards and winner of… Read More

Very Good, lacking the scarce dustwrapper if there ever was one. Brown boards with gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Her scarce first book. Ridge was an Irish-born New Zealand-American anarchist and modernist poet, and an influential editor of avant-garde, feminist, and Marxist publications. She was active in radical causes and was among those arrested for protesting against the executions of Sacco and Vanzetti in 1927. Her actions during the demonstration in front of the prison on the day Sacco and Vanzetti were executed were described by Katherine Anne Porter in her long essay, “The Never Ending Wrong.” Peter Quartermain described her in the DICTIONARY OF LITERARY BIOGRAPHY as “the nearest prototype in her time of the proletarian poet of class conflict, voicing social protest or revolutionary idealism.”

Description:
1962 - 1963. Manuscript. Very Good to Near Fine. Exceptional and important collection of five television typescripts: "The Hollywood Story," "Goodbye Is for the Birds," "North Star," "Don't Blow Bugles (The Mafia Man)," and "Only the Young"; most represented in more than one copy and all written for "The Richard Boone Show" [Boone was best known for starring in "Have Gun Will Travel"]. Some scripts are clean; other copies have extensive additions and deletions by Odets in ink, with one script designated as a Work Copy and SIGNED by him. After completing much of the preliminary work for the series Odets died in August 1963. The latest script is dated 17 June 1963. The show was considered one of the best dramatic programs on the air (Robert Blake was in its repertory) but only survived for two seasons after the loss of its executive story editor. Odets gained fame in the 1930s for two plays: WAITING FOR LEFTY and AWAKE AND SING. Though he wrote other plays, including GOLDEN BOY and THE COUNTRY GIRL,… Read More

Description:
[New York]: [Viking Press], [1943]. First Edition. Manuscript. Last page torn, not affecting text. Near Fine. Complete text, 1034 pages continuously numbered with variations; numbered consecutively by chapters. Placed into three large binders. Sinclair's own working copy, apparently a second draft and first complete early copy to be located. Extensive pencil annotations by the author with thousands of corrections, deletions, and additions to the text, from single words to entire pages. Many revisions greatly differ from the published novel. For instance, at the end of the first paragraph after describing Lanny Budd's inner convictions--"...that thou hast forsaken the Lord thy God, and that My fear is not in thee, saith the Lord God of Hosts"--Sinclair has added, then crossed out: "For of old time I have broken thy yoke, and burst thy bands; thou saidst, I will not transgress; when upon every high hill and under every green tree thou wanderest, playing the harlot." After a narrow defeat in a bitter… Read More
