It concerns the student unrest that occurred in the Free State Goldfields in the wake of political developments such as South Africa's new constitution, the Nkomati Accord, and the ANC's strategy to make the country ungovernable, along with economic factors affecting the Thabong area in particular. The events are seen as typical of the unrest occurring throughout South Africa at the time. .
