Description:
(Bampton: The Friends of St. Mary's, Bampton, 2005). Republished with new illustrations. 258 x 210 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. 124; contemporary photographs. Near fine condition. "Hughes-Owens was powerfully aware that the last memories of traditional rural life were fading before his eyes (he thanks 'many elderly parishioners, some of whom, alas, are no longer with us'), even if he was enough a man of the 1960s and 'Progress' to write approvingly that the returning First World War veterans 'had lost that old parochialism which had been the besetting fault of Bampton folk for so long'. Hence the title of the book. But it is a slightly misleading title: even if the recent memories which Hughes-Owens recorded give it its most enduring interest, the work is in fact a history of Bampton through the ages." .

(Cambridge, W. Heffer & Sons, 1926). Small 8vo; original paper over boards, with pictorial onlay and title label on spine, a little sunned, and slightly worn at extremities; past owner's hand stamp on front free endpaper; pp. viii + 108; some browning to endpapers; black-and-white plates. Good condition. "The Cambridge undergraduate of to-day would hardly recognise his prototype of a hundred years ago, if the latter could be brought to life. The past century has wrought a vast change in his appearance, vernacular, sobriety, diversions, and general behaviour. We can congratulate ourselves, however, that a better type has been evolved, although we can still recognise to-day modified (and improved) specimens of the men who were in residence in the early twenties." .

(London: John Murray, 1937). 8vo; original green cloth, with lettering to spine, and horse-drawn coach device to upper cover; no dustwrapper; pp. xiii + (i) + 319, incl. index; plates. Cloth irregularly sunned, and slightly worn at extremities; discoloration and dent to lower board; earlier owner's name signed on front free endpaper; moderate foxing throughout. Fair to good condition. English social history at its finest. The author shows how great was the divide between the townsman and the country dweller in eighteenth century England, and how parochial the lives of those living in the country could be. "Village life [Trevelyan tells us] embraced the chief daily concerns of the majority of Englishmen. It was the principal nursery of the national character. The village was not then a moribund society, as in the nineteenth century, nor was it, as in our day, a society hoping to revive by the backwash of life returning to it from the towns. The village and the country town, for the… Read More

Very good condition. "But it is more than just a description of buildings, being also an absorbing account of the great effort of Masters and Fellows to maintain and develop the College that was growing up on the Foundation of 1511. The narrative avoids technical discussion, but more details will be found in the Appendixes for readers who wish to go deeper into such matters. Mr Crook's earlier book 'From Penrose to Cripps' told the story from 1885 to 1978. The present book goes back to the beginning and brings the story up to 1885." .

But though this is a work to be read for pleasure, it is also a reference book packed with detailed fact on every aspect of the island's history, industry, communications, natural history and social life. Light foxing to edges. Very good condition. "Much of Peter Ackroyd's work has been concerned with the life and past of London but here, as a culmination, is his definitive account of the city. For him London is a living organism, with its own laws of growth and change, so his LONDON is a 'biography' not a history. It differs from other histories, too, in the range and diversity of its contents. Ackroyd portrays London from the time of the Druids to the beginning of the twenty-first century, noting magnificence in both epochs, but this is not a chronological record. There are chapters on the history of silence and the history of light, the history of childhood and the history of suicide, the history of Cockney speech and the history of drink. Anecdotal, brilliant… Read More

Heather Angel records nature as it is seen - the pine woods of the Cairngorms laden with snow, the flocks of barnacle geese on the banks of the Solway Firth, the immense charm of a southern chalk stream. But, as a creative photographer, she uses her art to explain the intricate ways of plants and animals resulting in an exquisite tribute to the British countryside." .
