"Hughes-Owens was powerfully aware that the last memories of traditional rural life were fading before his eyes (he thanks 'many elderly parishioners, some of whom, alas, are no longer with us'), even if he was enough a man of the 1960s and 'Progress' to write approvingly that the returning First World War veterans 'had lost that old parochialism which had been the besetting fault of Bampton folk for so long'. Hence the title of the book. But it is a slightly misleading title: even if the recent memories which Hughes-Owens recorded give it its most enduring interest, the work is in fact a history of Bampton through the ages." .

Very good condition. "But it is more than just a description of buildings, being also an absorbing account of the great effort of Masters and Fellows to maintain and develop the College that was growing up on the Foundation of 1511. The narrative avoids technical discussion, but more details will be found in the Appendixes for readers who wish to go deeper into such matters. Mr Crook's earlier book 'From Penrose to Cripps' told the story from 1885 to 1978. The present book goes back to the beginning and brings the story up to 1885." .
