(Cape Town: Maskew Miller, 1928). Small 4to; original blue cloth, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; pp. (vi) + 182; plates. Extremities somewhat worn; binding a little slack; moderate foxing throughout. Good. (Hosken, p. 69) 'This little volume from the pen of Miss Dorothea Fairbridge gives in the form of a story the impressions of an English lady on a visit to Cape Town. Miss Fairbridge, who is the authoress of several other works on South Africa, has a gift for descriptive writing, and "Along Cape Roads" may be regarded as an informal "guide." It will be read with interest by visitors and by oversea friends who may contemplate a visit, and South Africans will appreciate the fullness of the authoress's knowledge of the parts of the country which she describes. The six illustrations are reproductions of etchings by Mr. R. Gwelo Goodman, and some ot them appear for the first time.' .

"This humorous collection of stories from life at the Bar and on the Bench in the Cape takes a look back at four decades, starting at the end of World War Two and finishing with the arrival of democracy in South Africa. These tales and recollections, mostly from Bar members now in their 80s, show what an extraordinary time it was for lawyers. Also, remarkably, how much is of relevance to lawyers practising today." .

"This book makes no claim to be an archival chronicle of the history of False Bay; perhaps it would be more appropriate to call it a domestic chronicle for, though it has necessarily an historical basis, I have tried to give, as well as dates and data, a picture of how people have lived along the shores of the bay during the past 300 years and more, of the conditions under which they lived, their trials and rejoicings, the changes in their environment and in their manner of living as the years have gone by. All this will, I hope, add some flesh to the bones of history." .

History and overview of the city on the fringes of Cape Town. ' "Twaalf Myl" served for some considerable time as the unofficial but romantic name for the little hamlet in the romantic setting of the Tygerberg on the Elsieskraal River. The twelfth milestone can today be seen in the circle at the crossing of Voortrekker Road and Durban Road. Its original position was slightly westward. It is a neat milestone with a triangular top, hewn out of blue rock, and displaying the number twelve in Roman figures. It marked the twelfth mile from Cape Town on the Maitland Road, as the Cape road was called by the middle… Read More

"Nestled on the slopes of Signal Hill, the Bo-Kaap is Cape Town's multicoloured heart, and part of every tourist's itinerary. The vibrant neighbourhood contains a wealth of stories: of slavery and emancipation; faraway lands, food and spices; music and culture; devout faith; and, most of all, everyday life. This multifaceted book brings the essence of the Bo-Kaap to life through short pieces of prose, profiles of personalities, poems, recipes and photographs (old and new). Author Michael Hutchinson has also gathered personal glimpses of life in the Bo-Kaap from residents, as well as paintings and photographs that capture an artistic vision of the area." .
