Boards somewhat spotted, bumped, and worn at extremities; hand-stamp on verso of frontis. Very good internally; good condition overall. The biography of Alexander M. Mackay, pioneering missionary to Uganda, written by his sister. "I take this powerful body of native Christians in the heart of Africa - who prefer exile for the sake of their faith to serving a monarch indifferent or hostile to their faith - as more substantial evidence of the work of Mackay than any number of imposing structures clustered together and called a Mission station would be." - Henry Morton Stanley. .

Description:
(Leipzig, E. Bidder, 1882). ("Gedanken aus und nach der Schrift" S. 131) contempory cloth-back textured paper over boards, defective, pp. 72. Heavy browning and foxing. Poor. The Hermannsburg Missionary Society grew out of a religious revival in the region of Lüneberg during the mid-19th Century. The Society sent its first missionaries to East Africa but these were denied permission to preach in Gallaland and proceeded to Natal where they established a mission on the borders of Zululand. By the end of the century, 124 Hermannsburg missionaries had established themselves in South Africa. The item on offer here concerns itself with theological matters; it may be a critique of the Society and its approach - black letter script rather hard to read. .

Near-fine condition. Afrikaans text. (Cape Town: J. C. Juta, [preface dated 1929]). 8vo; original dark green cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; dustwrapper; pp. xii + 408, incl. index; folding map. Dustwrapper edgeworn and partially sunned (a remarkable survival nonetheless, considering the flimsy paper on which printed); backstrip partially sunned; trace of stippling to lower board; endpapers and edges a bit foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere; earlier owner's name signed verso of front free endpaper. Good condition. 'This work is a complementary volume to the Author's "Christian Missions in South Africa," and like the former endeavours to place the story of the missionary enterprise in its proper historical frame. Since the forces of Christianity and Civilisation move forward concurrently, the missionary undertaking stands in intimate relation to political and commercial movements, and can only be understood in its relation to them. The reader of this Book will obtain, together with full information on the… Read More

Description:
(Kijabi, Kenya, Kesho Publications, 1977). Paperback, card wraps scuffed, pp. (v) + 168, plates. Text lightly browned. 'Gladys Stauffacher writes about an Africa that has been her backyard since the late thirties. Married to Claudon Stauffacher, whose parents' lives are featured in this narrative, she has served in and visited many of the places she writes about. During their last term on the field, the Stauffachers pioneered a new station in one of the few primitive areas left in Kenya. Her own words are an excellent summation of what missionary life is all about. The story of missions is the story of young people and the young in heart, venturing into the unknown. It is the story of romance in the setting of a strange land, and joy or sorrow in lonely places.' .

(Hermanus: The Centre Press, 1999) 0620240938. Author's signed presentation inscription to front free endpaper. Large, squarish 8vo; laminated pictorial boards; pp. (ii) + 144. Boards ever so slightly rubbed. Very good condition. "All the stories in this book are based on historically documented facts, proving once again perhaps that truth really is stranger than fiction. The characters, although their names have been changed in some cases, were all real people. The problems which provided the conflict so important to real stories were real ones, some strange to modern life, others all too familiar. In these pages will be found birth and death, hope and despair, sickness and health, faith and unbelief, comedy and tragedy, loyalty and betrayal, love and hatred. Through all there runs like a golden thread woven into the fabric of these tales the hope that men and women must always have of a better world." .
