Monografieë van die Drukkunsmuseum Nr. 1. 150 x 240mm; original grey card wrappers; pp. 40; black-and-white photographs. Edges of wrappers a bit browned. Very good condition. Afrikaans text with English summary. The newspaper, De Volksstem (later De Volkstem then Die Volkstem), was first published in Pretoria in 1873 under the editorship of Jan F. Cilliers. In 1895 De Volksstem became the first daily newspaper in South Africa. Subsequent editors included Dr F.V. Engelenburg, Gustav Preller and N. Levi. In addition to the newspaper, Cilliers also engaged in commercial printing, and Wallachs' Printers & Publishing Company Limited was formed in 1905. An important contribution towards the history of the Afrikaans language and of Pretoria. .

Harry Klein, author of 'Land of the Silver Mist', describes this book as "a tribute to those wonderful old-timers of the Northern Transvaal who pioneered what was once the wilds of mountain and bush, the wonderful indigenous forests and the wide sweep of the Lowveld. It rekindles in my mind the names of the people I met long ago at Haenertsburg and around, the lives they lived, and the simplicity and happiness of a different form of life to that which we know today." .

'Ons klim die berge oor; / Paul Kruger gaat vooraan. / Die waters van die see, / Die bloue oceaan, / Begroet ons Volksbestaan / Ons onafhanklikheid / In Delagoa Baai / Naar Engeland [?waai?]' etc., etc. 'Kon Piet Retief ons land nou sien / En Gert Maritz en Pieter Uys / En al die martelare / Van onse droefheidsjare / En kon Pretorius hou vooraan / Met Paul ook naar die Oceaan / En naar die oorlogskepe gaan! / Kon almal uit hul grafte opstaan!' etc. etc. This item fell out of a copy of H.J. Hofstede, Geschiedenis van den Oranje-Vriustaat (published 1876). It needs to be researched, but may relate either to the delegation of Transvaal Boers sent to London to plead the cause of independence in the late 1870s; or it may date from 1900, when Kruger, went into exile in Europe [although the latter suggestion doesn't account for the reference to England in the first stanza.] This may be a transcription… Read More

The journal of Frans de Cuiper's expedition on behalf of the Dutch East India Company in search of Monomotapa's gold, with a reconstruction of the route followed. De Cuiper is reputed to have been the first European to have set foot in the area now occupied by the Kruger National Park. .

An account of factors influencing the disenfranchisement of Uitlanders in the Z.A.R., the principal work in this volume explains the suspicion of foreigners created following Shepstone's annexation of that territory, and the opportunism that came in the wake the discovery of gold. .
