Limited Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Larger than the 20 shilling A & C Black series, thia ia copy 53 of only 350 and signed by the fine watercolor artist, Australian Mortimer Menpes. He talked the publisher into using his daughter as the author, an experiment that was not repeated. Cream cloth with a lovely design of green and brown lines aand vines, with bright gilt title on the front and the unfaded spine. Top edge gilt. Edgewear at the bottom edge and less soiling than usual on the ccream cloth, which was the standard binding for the Black limited editions. Very nice inside, with no browning or foxing or prior owner marks. .

A splendid copy, easily very good plus in blue greg cloth with bright gilt titles on both the front cover and the spine. A series of black geometric lines also on front and spine. Top edge gilt. Very slight wear at the corners and spine ends. A hint of foxing occasionally, but not affecting the fine plates nor the tissue guards with captions.Nicholls, the artist, was known for floral and landscape watercolors, and these are evocative of sunny days in Cornwall. Sketch map at the rear shows the path of the famed Thames River from near Iffley to its mouth. Pages xii, 248 with index and 2 pages publisher ads at the rear. Endpapers are browned, as is usual. Inside, clean and tight with occasional light foxing that does not affect the plates. The watercolors by Menpes are a delight, all with captioned tissue guards. Unusually for this series, there are also 20 small chapter headings in color, a nice experiment that was not repeated.
