Sacramento, California , 1855. Two manuscript letters in ink, both on ruled paper with folding creases, the 1855 letter 8" x 12 1/2", with single spaced writing both sides, approx. 500 words. The 1856 letter 15" x 10", folded in half to make 4 pp., approx. 300 words, with small blindstamp top left corner depicting an eagle. The earlier letter is headed "September 18th 1855 Naperville Dupage County Illinois" and ends "Michael direct your letters Nevada County, Nevada post office, California". George writes to his brother Michael in Naperville that he has "seen a good dele sins i rote you they last letter", including a hundred "inshins" and some "Buffellow". He adds that "we had good luck all they way of may we left Council Bluff", and that he is not home sick yet. Poughkeepsie, NY, 1887. Flexible leather album, front cover stamped in gilt with title "Autographs" surrounded by gilt flourishes, spine decorated in gilt, all edges gilt. 98 pp, 19 of them blank, leaving 79 with manuscript and 78 signatures, 4 with writing in Japanese as well as English, 3 with full page calligraphic drawings of birds, with 38 photographs in the form of stamps including one oversize stamp measuring 1 3/4" x 2 1/4" of Mrs. C.C. Gaines, wife of the President of Eastman College ( the other stamps all measure 7/8" x 1"). The rest of the stamps are males, either students or faculty. The photographic stamps were done by C. H. Gallup of Poughkeepsie, NY. The album belonged to student Clif. J. Prosser. Very Good, the leather rubbed at edges, rear leather cover about half loosened from the board, light soiling. (Billy) Hayes was the track coach at Indiana University from1924-43, where he won eight Big Ten cross country titles and three NCAA crowns, five Big Ten track titles and the NCAA title in 1932, and coached world record holders and seven Olympians. Indiana University named its track and field Billy Hayes Track in his honor. Vaughn Shoemaker, longtime political cartoonist at the Chicago Daily News, won the 1938 and 1947 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning and created the character John Q. Public. ([6] pages) : color illustrations with color drawing of the hotel, color photos of two of the rooms and the lobby, rates, and 4 paragraphs of description. The hotel featured 200 rooms and 100 private baths. Built in 1912, the Hoyt closed in 1972 and was demolished in 1977. After its 1962 renovation by owner Harvey Dick, its nightclub Barbary Coast Lounge and Roaring 20s Room attracted celebrities such as Johnny Carson and Duke Ellington. . One Page,Folded Twice. Los Angeles: Clifton's Pacific Seas Cafeteria, 1939. No date, circa 1940. Clifton's Cafeteria opened in the early 1930's during the height of the Great Depression, and instituted a "Pay As You Wish" policy ( seen in fine print on the card), never turning away a customer, and giving away many free meals. In 1939 it underwent a complete renovation and was transformed into a 3-story restaurant with South Pacific "Tiki" theme called Clifton's Pacific Seas. After Jack Kerouac ate there, he made mention of it in "On the Road". The restaurant closed and was demolished in 1960. The card is Very Good, small corner creases. Verso of card is blank. .
