Louis-Francois Cassas and Cyprus: Engravings from the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation Collections

By Louis-Francois Cassas

Nicosia: Politistiko Hidryma Trapezes Kyprou, 2009. Brand new. Bilingual (greek-english) edition. Folio, 45 x 60 cm; contains six facsimiles of engravings by Louis-Francois Cassas, which are to be found in the Foundation’s collections and show views of Cyprus towns: Cyreneia, Larnaca, Famagusta, Bellapais and St. Hilarion. Louis-Francois Cassas was a designer, engraver, sculptor and archeologist, who visited Cyprus twice, in February and April of 1785. Today, the few designs of Cassas make up the first successful attempt at a figurative representation of these Cyprus monuments that have been so much celebrated by artists and writers. In 1799, there appeared the edition "Voyage pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phenicie, de la Palestine et dans la Basse Egypte" together with the six sheets of Cassas containing the views of Cyprus. This edition is perhaps the most important illustrated book of the 18th century on Middle East and Cyprus. ============================================================== IMPORTANT: The shipping cost estimated by the system covers books weighing up to 750 gr.; a surcharge depending on the actual weight and destination applies for heavier books. Maps of the Mediterranean Regions Published in British Parliamentary Papers 1801-1921

By Susan Gole

Nicosia, 1996. Brand new. In English. Hard cover, 30X22.5 cm, 432 pp., ill.: 330 maps. A large-format, illustrated and fully documented cartobibliography of all the maps of Mediterranean regions included in the British Parliamentary Papers between 1801 and 1921. Unlike the British Parliamentary Papers themselves, which have been the subject of exhaustive research and numerous publications, the maps included in the Papers constituted until recently an uncharted territory. Thus Susan Gole's cartographic corpus is an original contribution as it brings to light hitherto unknown cartographic material: the maps of the Mediterranean regions, selected out of a total of two to three thousand maps included in the British Parliamentary Papers. The 330 illustrated entries, covering an area from the Straits of Gibraltar to the Bosphorus and the Black Sea, are listed in geographical order, each section being introduced by a brief note on the historical background to the area. Entries include the title, cartographer, scale, size and publisher of each map, as well as the full title, session and vol. no. of the paper to which the map was attached. Supplementary information about the map and its theme is provided in accompanying texts. The volume also comprises an extensive introduction on the British Parliamentary Papers and the maps attached to them, detailed indexes, as well as a list of the map number and corresponding transparency number in the British Library Reprographic Department, for those who might wish to order duplicate copies of the maps presented here. Susan Gole's book should prove of great interest not only to specialists in the field of cartography, but also to scholars of various disciplines, especially those dealing with aspects of diplomatic, military and economic history. It is also an edition that can be enjoyed by a wider readership, as it vividly depicts the changes in the Mediterranean world that occurred in the 19th century and to a large extent prefigured 20th-century developments in the area. ================================================================== IMPORTANT: The shipping cost is an important parameter of this order; it is in NOT included in the price and depends on the actual weight and destination; you will have to approve it after the confirmation of the order. Cyprus 1542 - The Great Map of the Island by Leonida Attar

By Francesca Cavazzana Romanelli & Gilles Grivaud

In English. Soft cover book, 30X22.5 cm, 152 pp., ill. The large scale map of Cyprus (139 x 64 cm), coloured using the aquarelle technique, was drawn up in 1542 by the Cypriot Leonidas Attar. Attar was appointed by the Venetian authorities as a specialist in irrigation works and military fortifications, which he undertook together with Michelle and Girolamo Sanmicheli in both Venice and Cyprus; at the same time, he acquired the technical knowledge and experience in the drawing up of maps. Probably for strategic and military reasons, the map remained hidden in the archives of Venice from the 16th century onwards, and until a few years ago it was scarcely known. The discovery and study of the map by the authors has demonstrated that it is a very important primary source for cartography and for the history of Cyprus. The map shows the features of administrative and political cartography designed to furnish territorial information for governmental purposes. In the background of the map is depicted the crowned lion of Venice and the emblem of the Order of the Sword that was founded by the Lusignan King Peter I, as well as the novel image of a tongue in a vice, a feature that recalls the punishments meted out to blasphemers. The map gives important information on the topography and morphology of Cyprus, with its eleven administrative districts, approximately six hundred villages, numerous religious monuments and archaeological sites. ================================================================== IMPORTANT: The shipping cost is an important parameter of this order; it is in NOT included in the price and depends on the actual weight and destination; you will have to approve it after the confirmation of the order. The Evolution of the Sea Chart, from its Origin in the Mediterranean Sea to its Development by European Seamen into their Principal Instrument of Navigation

By Christopher Terrell

Nicosia: Politistiko Hidryma Trapezes Kyprou, 1999. Brand new. In english. Soft cover, 30X22.5 cm, 48 pp., ill. Despite its great attraction for the layman, the development of the sea chart cannot be understood without reference to the progress achieved in the fields not only of cartography but also of mathematics, astronomy and instrument making. From the early thirteenth-century sea charts on vellum to the nineteenth-century sophisticated British hydrographical surveys, chart-making underwent a variety of phases ranging from the Mediterranean portolans to the French eighteenth-century school of organized hydrography.

MAPS OF CYPRUS: FROM THE SIXTEENTH TO THE EIGHTEEN CENTURY - Eleven facsimiles from the Map Collection of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation

By Ch. Hadjichristodoulou & I. Hadjicosti (eds.)

Bilingual (greek-english) edition. Folio 66X50 cm. Contains 11 reproductions of old maps from the Collection of the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation dated from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The rare and precious maps of Cyprus were printed and circulated throughout Europe, and contain important information concerning both mapping itself as well as the centuries-long and disturbed history of Cyprus; such as, for example, the description of Greek place-names before and after the conquest of the island by the Turks in 1571. Apart from maps of Cyprus, there is in the folder another notable group of maps of the Mediterranean and the Near East, including Cyprus. In these are illustrated important historical events, such as the journey of Aeneas from Troy to Rome linked with that of Odysseus from Troy to Ithaca, the march of Alexander the Great to Asia and the course of the missionary journeys by the Apostle Paul. ============================================================== IMPORTANT: The shipping cost estimated by the system covers books weighing up to 750 gr.; a surcharge depending on the actual weight and destination applies for heavier books. Cyprus on Historical Maps

By Evangelos Livieratos

Nicosia, 2010. Brand new. In English. Soft cover, 30X22 cm, 56 pp., ill. The depiction of Cyprus island on historical maps: Placement, Shape and Orientation from a digital point of view. This study is focused on a geometrical analysis of several important historical cartographic illustrations of Cyprus, from the 14th to the 19th centuries, showing its geographical position in the region, and especially at the eastern edge of the Mediterranean; its exceptionally memorable shape and the orientation of the island in relation to the geographic north. In addition, the more widely applied methods and techniques of digital cartography have made possible an analysis of the shape patterns, of the linear outline of the shores of Cyprus, that is to say; and various historical maps from the 15th to the 18th centuries are classified, the emphasis being on the cartographic period of the Renaissance. ================================================================== IMPORTANT: The shipping cost is an important parameter of this order; it is in NOT included in the price and depends on the actual weight and destination; you will have to approve it after the confirmation of the order.
