Description:
London: Thomas McLean, 1825. Aquatint and engraving, coloured by hand. Sheet sizes: 9 3/8 x 11 5/8 inches and 9 1/2 x 11 7/8 inches. A handsome and humourous pair of angling prints. The first image shows a fisherman with a slack line just after losing a fish and stepping into a cow pad, with the Virgil caption roughly translated as "Thus all things change for the worse." The Horace quotation is a play on words, substituting "Perchicos" [perch] for "Persicos" [i.e. Persian], and roughly translated as "The finest perch is not for me." The second image shows an angler who has pulled a fish from the water but whose line (and fish) are caught in a tree. The famous fishing-related Horace quotation follows, "The fish was entangled in the elm tree." The Virgil quotation refers to the climbing into the river to free his line and can be read as "courage to tempt the raging stream.

Description:
[South Africa?], 1941. Quarto. Unnumbered title plus 32 numbered leaves, recto only. Signed by Bostock on the upper wrapper. Publisher's stapled wrappers. Provenance: Humphrey Winterton (booklabel) A very rare WWII "regimental history" of a South African battery in the East African Campaign. Written by Bostock, with contributions by others in the regiment, the introduction below the title describes the work: "These few sketches of our life, principally in Abyssinia, but to some extent in Kenya, from October 1940 to May 1941, started as a personal record which I thought might be of interest to friends in South Africa and Overseas. Our Battery Commander, however, was good enough to take the view that, somewhat expanded, they might constitute a kind of interim battery record of those interesting months..." Organized alphabetically, entries include both serious and humorous contributions. OCLC records but a single extant example.

4to. (15 5/16 x 10 1/4 inches). 90 leaves of 18th-century watermarked glazed paper. 18th-century French red morocco boards with elaborate gilt borders, spine gilt in six compartments, four silk ties at board edges, all edges gilt. Provenance: Edgard Stern (bookplate) 90 blank sheets of laid paper with the watermark of a French/Dutch papermaker, in a beautiful red morocco binding. This watermark originates from the mills of Jean Villadary [or Villedary], a French papermaker in Angoumois, Vraichamp, Beauvais or La Couronne. From 1668 to 1758, the firm was active in France and afterwards, they owned a paper mill in Hattem, Gelderland, in the Netherlands, until 1812. A law passed in 1688 regulating paper manufacturing ruled that the initials and name of papermarks had to be added to the watermark on every sheet of paper made. The name or initials VI (or IV) can be found over a period of 150 years, during which they became known as a hallmark of excellence. Churchill, W.A.. Watermarks in Paper in… Read More

Description:
Augsburg: Published in Augsburg by Jeremias Wolff, 1695. Engraving with superb early colour and rich gold highlights. Printed on watermarked laid paper. In excellent condition. Image size: 9 5/8 x 6 3/4 inches. This is a handsome print, with breathtaking early colour, depicting the actor Ange Constantin in costume. Angelo Constantini (d. 1729) was one of the pillars of the commmedia dell'arte in Paris from 1682 until 1697, when Louis XIV closed it down. He was the author of Vie de Scaramouche, 1692, and had a devoted following for his singing and expressive acting. The character he made famous was Mezzetin or Mezzetino, a scheming, clever, flirtatious servant. Constantini later went to Dresden to form an Italian acting troupe under the patronage of Augustus II, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony. Very unwisely, Constantini became involved with Augustus' mistress and was imprisoned for many years. Finally, he released when he was in his sixties, he returned to Paris for some very successful… Read More

Description:
Antigua, West Indies, 1850. Watercolour on paper, inscribed lower left and lower right. Sheet size: 9 7/8 x 13 7/8 inches. Excellent panoramic view from the Monks' Hill Fort looking south east down across Falmouth Harbour, English Harbor and out across the Caribbean. According to William R. O'Byrne's A Naval Biographical Dictionary (London: 1849) Vol. 1, p.70, Bellairs joined the Navy in 1809 and made Lieutenant in 1819. From 1842 he served as Admiralty Agent on board a 'contract Mail steam-vessel'. He evidently travelled widely: the National Maritime Museum in London holds two of his West Indian drawings, the National Library of Australia a watercolour of a scene in Panama, and a collection of his drawings of the Far East were sold in 1982. As the present drawing shows he was clearly gifted, and more than a match for many of the professional artists working at the time. His 'professional' status received contemporary confirmation when his watercolour 'View of the town of St. Thomas, in the West… Read More

Brooklyn: The Galois Institue of Mathematics and Art, Long Island University, 1965. 8vo and various sizes. A heartwarming archive of a mid-century husband-and-wife creative team, this collection centers on Hugh Gray Lieber's 1936 artist's book created as a Valentine's Day gift for his wife, Lillian Rosanoff Lieber, a well-known popularizer of math and science. Neither strictly Surrealist, nor comic-strip cartoonists, the Liebers show, as in William Steig and Wilhelm Reich's "Listen, Little Man," the communicative power of text and image used in tandem. "I have studied with pleasure this new book . . . beautiful examples . . . illuminating. I am convinced that [Lieber's] original enterprise will get the recognition it so richly deserves." - Albert Einstein on the Liebers' The Education of T. C. Mits "Oh, what a delightful book! New York, London and Paris, 1835. Engraving, open letter mounted India paper proof, pencil signed by Durand at the lower right on the mount. Plate size: 17 1/8 x 20 5/8 inches. Sheet size: 20 x 22 1/2 inches. Grolier viii/viii; Stauffer iii/iii. Signed, India paper proof of Durand's most acclaimed and most controversial work. Asher Durand was hailed as "the most famous engraver in America" and "the father of American landscape painting". His bold clean style was an immediate success, and he consequently produced some of the most important engravings in American print history. "The most noted achievements of Mr. Durand's burin are his two plates of the nude -- Musidora, after his own design, published in 1825, and the Ariadne, after Vanderlyn's masterpiece, published a decade later -- in both of which the rendering of the flesh is particularly successful. Description:
1791. Folio. 24pp. Stitched as issued. Top corner of first leaf torn away, affecting several lines of text. Lightly dampstained and worn throughout. Still very good. Early and unrecorded imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France. Issued at a critical moment at the beginning of the French Revolution, the lengthy text concerns the government and judiciary of the island, together with a proclamation by the King dated August 24, 1790. The text nominally recognizes the authority of the King, while taking measures to establish major autonomy of local government. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598. After exploiting the island's dense forests for a century and introducing the cultivation of sugar cane and cotton, in 1710 the Dutch abandoned the colony. The French soon claimed it as "Ile de France," and the island remained under the control of the French East India Company until 1767. During… Read More

A remarkable early imprint from the colonial press at the French colony of Mauritius, also known as the Ile de France, in the south Indian Ocean. The text contains a report of the French Revolutionary Committee of Public Safety regarding prisoners arrested on the island of Réunion being held as enemies of the Revolution. The document was printed in the capital, Port Louis, which was called Port de la Montagne from 1792 to 1795. The Dutch were the first Europeans to become interested in the island, taking possession in 1598.
