Description:
LONDON: T Cadell, 1791 Hannah More's collection of essays for 'young ladies' written from her own teaching experience. They range from 'sentimental connexions' to 'miscellaneous thoughts on wit'. They were extremely popular and much reprinted. She dedicated the work to Elizabeth Montagu of blue stocking fame. This is a copy of the 5th edition. The full leather binding is worn and the front board detached. There was clearly an attempt some time ago to strengthen the joint - a linen band has been stuck to the front board and endpaper. This has caused some slight browning to the first few leaves internally. There is small loss to the top of the spine and the hinge to the back board is weak. The contents however are very clean and bright with little other marking.

Description:
London: Richard Bentley; and Bell & Bradfute, 1850 A fair copy of the Richard Bentley single volume edition in the original Bentley Standard Novels decorative cloth binding. With tissue-guarded frontispiece and endpapers listing the Standard Novels. The binding is bright and clean. There is some wear at splitting at the spine ends and the beginning of splitting at the front joint. The corners are bumped and there is some scuffing to the boards. Internally, the endpapers are clean with an ownership signature to the front pastedown. Contents with frontispiece; title; preface to first and second editions (to p xi) text 394 pp; excerpt from the Morning Herald of 6.10.1849 4pp. The stitching is a little wobbly in a couple of places, and there is some splitting at the rear endpaper joint, but the contents are generally clean and sound. There is some spotting to the frontispiece and occasional brown spots, generally to the bottom or side margin. These are particularly noticeable at pp 28-34 and 200-202.… Read More

Description:
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1939 A good to very good copy of this scarce contemporary biography of M R James. Samuel Gurney Lubbock (1862-1936) knew James from his early years and planned the work as a 'personal sketch' or portrait, encouraged by others from James' circle. It is not an objective analytical biography but it does give a picture of James's life. There is a list of M R James' writings at the rear compiled by A F Scholfield. It is in the original green cloth with gilt titles to spine. The boards have some faded areas and the spine is faded. There is pulling to spine ends and some corner wear. Internally there is the bookplate of James Orton and a label titled 'M R James Collection' to the front pastedown endpaper. Contents complete and clean, with frontispiece and 2 further plates. There is some browning to the free endpapers and the backing is visible between pages 32/33, but the binding is sound. There are old pencil notes on the rear pastedown and some items in the listing of… Read More
