Description:
Tolosae [Toulouse]: Apud Arnaldum Colomerium, Regis, & Academiae Tolosanae Typographum, 1648 A very rare copy of a city pharmacopoeia in possibly contemporary loose vellum wrap. The Pharmaceutical profession was subject to strict regulations from its earliest origins. Reference or formula books were required, guarded, and handed down. In 17th and 18th century France, major cities published their own pharmacopoeia, with 'official' authority. This is the Toulouse pharmacopoiea authored by Pontio Francisco Purpan. It is missing the title page but the contents look otherwise complete with: 3 blank leaves (one looks bright and may have been added at some point); frontispiece by Stuerhelt, with banner 'Dant Sydera Vires'; Dedication by Purpan, 2pp; full page engraving by Stuerhelt; letter by Purpan to a series of nobles 4pp (there is a very well repaired paper tear to the first leaf of the letter); Extract des Registres de Parlement 1p; Catalogue 1p; Lectori 1p; Index Capitum 1p; Codicis… Read More

Lyon : Antoine Chard, 1625 An exceptionally rare work on gynaecology by Lovys de Serres - a doctor practicing in Lyon in the 17th century. He is cited by one source as being the first author to devote an entire work to gynaecology. This copy is in a newer full leather binding with gilt decorated raised bands to the spine and extensive gilt decoration to the boards. The binding is in fine condition. Description:
London : W. Nicoll, 1769 A good copy of a very scarce work, originally issued as part of a two volume work called 'The City Remembrancer'. This consisted of 3 books, with separate title pages and pagination, on the Great Plague, Fire and Storm of London. The title page for the 'Remembrancer' states that the source material for the work is Dr Gideon Harvey's papers. Dr Harvey ?1640-?1700 became the king's 'Physician to the Tower'. He is known for a variety of medical works (and for using his writing to discredit other physicians). This copy has been rebound by Bath Municipal Reference Library, and is in a near fine buckram cloth binding with gilt title, reference number and date to spine. The internal endpaper joints are reinforced and there is the armorial library bookplate to the fep, together with some reference numbers at the top. There are no other library markings. The binder has introduced a new front blank and has probably misbound the Introduction, which should… Read More

Description:
AMSTERDAM: MARC-MICHEL REY, 1769 Complete in 2 volumes bound in one in contemporary full leather binding. Charles Bonnet was born and lived in Switzerland - his profession was law but his interest was in natural science. He established the principle of 'parthenogenesis' in aphids through some early research. In this, his principle later work, he "advocates the view that the female body carries all future generations in miniature form. He believed that these so-called Homunculi would survive even the most severe catastrophes, like the Flood." (courtesy of whonamedit). This copy is a first edition. The binding, which has a red title label, raised bands outlined in gilt with gilt decorations to the spine and is full leather, is worn with splitting at the joints and wear to edges and corners. The contents are: title page; preface i-xvi; table xvii-xxiv; section 'Analyse abregee de l'essai analyticque - pp 1-58; title page -Tableau des considerations sur les corps organises; text… Read More

Description:
London [Antwerp]: Gerard Dewes, 1578 A fair to good copy of the first English translation of Dodoens 'Cruydeboeck' (book of plants) which was published in 1554, and which was a major reference work in its time. This copy is bound in full calf with probably contemporary boards and a later spine. The spine has 5 raised bands and gilt title. There is general scuffing to the boards and wear with leather loss at the corners. The leather around the bottom corner at the front is rippled. The spine is sound and clean with some wear at the top. Endpapers look to be newer with repair at the joint. Most copies of this edition tend to be incomplete to varying degrees and with repair. This is no exception and is lacking pp 775-779 and the first 3 pages of the index. At two points, leaves from a later smaller copy have been inserted and some pages are very fragile with some loss.
In detail: title in woodcut border with a woodcut of Henry Lyte's coat of arms to the verso. This leaf has both outer corners missing… Read More

His major work - Adversaria Anatomica - established his reputation in the field. This is a collection of his minor works including on the death of Cleopatra, and on gallstones. The vellum is yellowed, with browning at the edges and corners and the spine is darkened. There is particular wear to the spine joints at the top spine end with some splitting. Description:
Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Danielem Elsevirium, 1671 A very good copy of the '3rd and Final' edition of Richard Lower's major treatise on the working of the heart and lungs. Richard Lower (1631-1691) was the first person to perform a blood transfusion, reporting in 1666 that blood had been successfully transferred between 2 dogs. Shortly afterwards he carried out an experiment to transfuse some blood from a sheep to a man - with some hopes that the gentleness of the lamb would be carried in the blood. He counted Thomas Willis (founder of the Royal Society) and Robert Hooke as close associates and was a follower of William Harvey. Tractatus de Corde (roughly translated as Treatment of the Heart) was his most important work, detailing his experimental surgery and findings. This copy, in contemporary full leather binding, formed part of the Selbourne Library - acquired by the late Hugh Selbourne - and has the Selbourne Library stamp to the verso of the title page, and the bottom margin of p 51.… Read More

Description:
London: John Wilson, 1830 A fair copy in the original publisher's temporary boards with untrimmed pages. Written in pre-antibiotic days when venereal disease was on the increase - with some heart-rending case studies including a woman infected by her husband and the impact on the children. Inscribed 'from the author' on a preliminary. Classed as 'fair' because the binding, although currently sound, is very worn at the spine and edges and is grubby; and internally there are library marks. This copy was part of a bequest from Arthur Jacob to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland library in 1871 (and therefore it is possible that Jacob was the original receipient of the book from the author). Jacob has put his name in capitals at some points (including the title page and the reverse of the last contents page and at the end) and there is a library stamp to the title page. With pasted publisher's advert, inscription from author, title page, advertisement, contents listing, and… Read More
