London: Thomas Martyn At his Academy for Illustrating and Painting Natural History, 1793 A good to very good copy of the first edition of this extremely scarce work. With hand coloured frontispiece, 28 hand coloured plates, and 2 plates of medals. Thomas Martyn is principally known as a draughtsman of natural history works. This publication is drawn from Charles Clerck's study dated 1757 and Eleazor Albin's Natural History of Spiders from 1736. The binding has a newer black morocco leather spine with decorative gilt bands and gilt titles. The boards are probably as issued by the publisher. There is rubbing and wear to the spine joints - particularly the top of the front joint - and rubbing to spine ends. The boards have a lot of wear to the marbled paper and the corners - which look to have been leather-covered at some point - are very worn. London: The Ray Society, 1925 A very good to near fine set in the original Ray Society cloth bindings with 60 plates of which 18 are coloured or partly coloured. Vol I is inscribed and signed by Chas D Soar at the front free endpaper. The bindings are very bright and clean with slight fading to spines. Light pulling to spine ends. All have small bottom corner tip bumps - in Vol I there is some scuffing to the edge with cloth loss (about 1 cm) just before the bump. Vol I has a small dent to the side edge of the front board. Vol I issued 1925, Vol II 1927, and Vol III 1929. The contents of all are complete and very clean. There is brown toning to free endpapers. The Ray Society publication notes at the rear of each volume are largely unopened.

LONDON: Ray Society, 1901 A very good copy of this 2 volume work published in 1901 and 1903. In the original Ray Society binding with 28 colour and 14 black and white plates. An authoritative work still used today. The bindings are very bright and clean. Vol I has a more faded spine with slight pulling. Vol II has a spine lean towards the front and a slight bump to the top corner of the back board. Vol I: original endpapers; 2 title pages; preface; abbreviations; contents; text and 13 colour and 9 black and white plates at the rear; list of Ray Society publications and Ray Society business. There is a very small repaired edge tear the side of p33 and the top corner of the rear endpaper has been turned over at some point. Vol II: original endpapers; 2 title pages; preface; contents; text with 15 colour and 5 black and white plates at the rear; List of Ray Society publications and Ray Society business. Text pages slightly toned in comparison with Vol I. A nice set.

London: Whittaker, Treacher, and Co., 1833 A very good copy of the Royal 8vo edition in the original publisher's cloth binding with 60 hand coloured plates. Part of Edward Griffith's major work on Cuvier's Animal Kingdom, but complete as a single volume. The series was a very expensive production, with this volume costing £3 12s 0d in 1833. As a result it is very scarce. The binding has a paper label to spine and is clean and sound, although there are a couple of places internally where the stitching is wobbly (pp 162 and 304). There is some pulling to spine ends and the corners have wear with some turning and bumping. Board surfaces slightly scuffed. Contents: half title; series title; volume title; plate list; Annelida pp 1-130 with 8 plates; Crustacea pp 131-382 with 25 plates; Arachnida pp 383-533 with 27 plates; alphabetical listing pp 535-540. London: George Samouelle, 1841 A good copy of the 2nd edition in 2 volumes in buckram cloth bindings, with 156 hand coloured plates from drawings by the author. George Samouelle was employed as a Keeper at the British Museum in the entomology collections for 19 years. He is best known for his Entomologist's Useful Compendium (which he later expanded and republished under a different title). The work was much used and commended by other well known entomologists such as John Curtis and William Spence. The Entomological Cabinet was issued in parts (a way of raising income for publication) with work on it starting in 1829. The first edition was published in 1833/34. There were plans for a second issue - but there was not enough interest. The 2 parts that were issued were incorporated in the second edition. LONDON : Ray Society, 1861 An exceptional copy. Complete in 2 volumes - rebound - brown leather spines with raised bands and gold lettering; marbled boards in fine condition. Original Ray Society plates retained and pasted onto new end papers.Volume 1 issued in 1861 and Volume 2 in 1864. Contents in very good condition with 29 hand coloured plates drawn from nature by Tuffen West. Some brown age spotting.

EDINBURGH: W H Lizars, S Highley et al, 1840 A very good copy of the first edition in the original publisher's cloth binding, which has been rebacked relaying the spine. With volume listing; half title; black and white frontispiece portrait of Baron de Geer; hand coloured vignette title page of insects; 2 further title pages; publisher's advert (unopened); contents listing; Memoir of Swammerdam; Memoir of De Geer; text with black and white illustrations; and 36 plates bound at the rear of which 32 are hand coloured. The plates are numbered to 35, but there is a plate 12*. The binding is sound and tight and the rebacked spine has bright gilt titles. The boards are very faded at the edges. Corners with light wear. The original green endpapers are present with professional repair at the joints. The text paper is toned with the occasional light mark or spot. Some text is unopened. The plates are tissue-guarded and are very clean and well coloured. There is some offsetting to guards.

Edinburgh: W H Lizars, S Highley et al, 1835 A fair copy of the 1st edition of British Butterflies, vol III of Entomology from the Naturalist's Library edited by Sir William Jardine. In newer cloth binding with the original gilt titles pasted to the spine, with 34 plates of which 32 are hand coloured. With frontispiece portrait of Werner; hand coloured vignette title page; 2 further title pages; advertisement; contents listing; Memoir of Werner; text 246 pp; and 2 plain plates and 32 hand coloured plates at the rear. The binding is a plain blue cloth which is clean and has turned corners. There is a decorative bookplate at the front pastedown endpaper and a bookseller's label on the fep. Internally the usual preliminaries (eg volume listing, half title) are missing, as is the publisher's listing from the rear. There is no tissue guard to the frontispiece and there is an old signature at the top of the vignette title page. London : Harrison and Co , 1785 A rare and beautiful introduction to natural history. In 2 folio volumes with 99 (of 100) hand coloured plates by Moses Harris and others after his style. Martyn is a pseudonym for William Fordyce Mavor, who authored a wide range of works. The books are set out alphabetically, with the plates reflecting this classification, so they can portray lizards and lynx side by side on the same plate. The pages are double column and unpaginated. The text for each animal is thoughtfully put together eg for the guinea pig 'The Guinea-Pig is a very cleanly creature and totally different from that that affords it a name....Guinea-Pigs repose on their bellies, pretty much in their usual posture...'. The plates are nicely coloured and the ones by Moses Harris (butterflies, moths and shells) are particularly well drawn. This copy is in a contemporary half leather binding with marbled boards.
