Description:
London: Printed by J G for Nathanael Webb and William Grantham at the signe of the Bear in St Paul's Church-yard, 1654 A good copy in contemporary full pigskin with blind ruled lines to boards. The pages have been cropped so the margins and gutter are quite small and the book is slightly bowed as if it has been held or kept in a pocket for ease of reference. It is certainly an entertaining read. Thomas Hall (circa 1610-1665) was a Presbyterian and, at the time of publication, was Pastor of Kingsnorton. His congregation dismissed him at the Restoration - and if his sermons resembled his writing, it is easy to imagine why. A small sample: 'Lastly, as no man may weare his owne haire excessively long, so he may not weare the long haire of another, be it of a man, a woman, or it may be of some harlot, who is now in Hell, lamenting there the abuse of that excrement'. The binding is sound, with a area of leather loss at the bottom of the spine and light general wear. Contents with title (blank verso); poems… Read More

Description:
London: Printed by John Pindley for Samuel Macham, 1613 A fair copy of the extremely scarce 1st edition in newer half leather binding. Classed as 'fair' because 2 leaves are in facsimile and a further leaf has lost its side margin which may have had reference notes. Bishop Joseph Hall (1574-1656) held high positions in the English Church and was known for his scholarship and skills in debate. He became a Doctor of Divinity in 1612 and turned increasingly from writing to preaching. Henry, Prince of Wales, made Hall his Chaplain in 1608, and he was invited by James I to preach a sermon on the 19th anniversary of his accession. Contents: title (blank verso); dedication 4pp; text 109pp; Finis. The title page has an elaborate archway design and there are decorative headpieces and initial capitals. The binding is in near fine clean condition with title label to spine and marbled boards. The endpapers are contemporary with the binding. Text paper is lightly toned but generally clean. Page edges are a little… Read More

Description:
Oxford: Printed by Leonard Lichfield, 1642 An extremely scarce 1st edition copy of Francis Potter's work. Potter (1594-1678) was a clergyman with a wide range of other interests. He was an early member of the Royal Society (admitted in 1663), experimenting with bees, theorising about blood transfusion and making instruments including a sundial. He developed a theory that the approximate square root of 666 - 25 - had a strong connection with catholic institutions. His first attempt to set this out in 1637 was described as a 'wonderful discovery' by Joseph Mede, whose 'judgement' is included in the work. This copy has been rebacked, relaying as much as possible of the spine, which has raised bands, red title label and the date at the base. The corners have been rebuilt. The boards are marbled with a stain on the rear board. Edges are scuffed. Internally there is the armorial bookplate of William Legge to the front pastedown endpaper. The endpaper joints have been repaired. Page edges are red. Contents:… Read More

Description:
London: T Payne; P Elmsly; B White; and J Walter, 1775 A very good 3 volume set with 29 plates (some text engravings) and 3 maps as called for in contemporary full calf bindings. Jacob Bryant (1715-1804) is chiefly known for this work which attempts to link the mythologies of the world to stories and events in the book of Genesis. It was seen as an important publication and is credited with influencing the work of William Blake. Blake was apprenticed to the engraver James Basire whose name appears at the bottom of most of the plates, and is believed to have worked on them. The bindings are in very good clean condition and have been rebacked at some point, retaining the original spines with gilt decorative compartments and red title labels. The boards are in very good condition with some corner wear. The marbled endpapers look to be contemporary with repair at the joints. There is the armorial bookplate of William Orme Foster (1814-1899) to the front pastedowns. He was an iron and coal-master, owning… Read More
