Description:
Cologne::: Taschen,, 1991.. First Paperback Printing. Fine copy in paperback wraps. De Stijl from the Dutch for "The Style" is also known as neoplasticism, was a Dutch artistic movement founded in 1917. In a narrower sense, the term De Stijl is used to refer to a body of work from 1917 to 1931, founded in the Netherlands. Proponents of De Stijl sought to express a new utopian ideal of spiritual harmony and order. They advocated pure abstraction and universality by a reduction to the essentials of form and color; they simplified visual compositions to the vertical and horizontal directions, and used only primary colors along with black and white. This volume provides a broad representation of the movement.

Description:
Silver Spring: :: Enigma Books,, 1993.. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. When he wrote this memoir over sixty years ago, the author planned a privately printed edition as gifts for his friends. He chose a pseudonym, W.W. Windstaff, to avoid embarrassing his socially prominent family. His true identity remains a secret. In a unique style, Lower than Angels captures the essence of war with wonderfully descriptive passages of air combat, and life in Paris and Rome during the 1920s. Later, Windstaff vividly memorializes the expatriate experience. More than simply a memoir of fascinating times, Lower than Angels is a raw and powerful portrayal of a man who could not overcome the trauma of war, and survived with a veneer of cynicism aided by the bottle. Lower than Angles will certainly be appreciated for its value as an historical record. It will also captivate readers with its charm, and delight a wide audience.

Description:
Boston::: Houghton Mifflin,, 1996.. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine unread copy in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. Stovall's revelatory chronicle reclaims an important yet neglected chapter of cultural history, delineating a cohesive community of black American expatriate writers, artists, musicians and intellectuals in Paris from 1914 to the present. During WWI African American soldiers, targets of discrimination on the front and back home, were welcomed cordially by ordinary French citizens. Attracted by the myth of a color-blind France, Harlem Renaissance writers Langston Hughes, Claude McKay and Countee Cullen flocked to Paris; Josephine Baker conquered the stage with her sensational performances; jazz musicians Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Bill Coleman lived in and drew inspiration from the City of Light. In the 1930s African American expatriate writers and artists in Paris helped launch the Negritude movement. Postwar Paris became a magnet to writers like Richard Wright, James… Read More

Description:
New York:: Carroll & Graf,, 2000.. First Printing of the First Edition.. A Fine unread copy in a Fine dust jacket. Wiser, author of The Crazy Years: Paris in the Twenties, provides readers with Paris's next historical chapter in a wonderfully detailed, unflinching period description. Focusing primarily on the art scene, Wiser re-creates the slow slide from the lingering euphoria of the '20s to the doubts of the '30s. The suicide of painter Jules Pascin, recounted in Wiser's first chapter, serves as an emblem for the era, a period in which fascism and economic crisis loomed and Bohemia began to sour.
