Description:
Syracuse::: Syracuse University Press,,, 1976... First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. The author examines the emergence of surrealism through the nineteenth century heritage of romanticism and naturalism and assesses the works of Apollinaire and analyzes Andre Breton's 1924 Manifestoe of Surrealism. Matthew's study of Breton's Anthology of Black Humor and the writings of the leading Belgian surrealist Paul Nouge reflects the use of surrealism as a language of revolt. Matthew' also investigates the subversive poetics of surrealism by examining surrealist attitudes toward the Marquis de Sade and commenting on their political position.
