RARE: There is a cartoon character in Finnish folklore, first appearing in 1847 by way of Ancient Rome. A doctor named Elias Lonnrot, he often visited patients in remote areas, listening to their ballads and songs, as well as publishing them. Tales of great deeds, love songs, spells for a great harvest, and spells for healing. This Kalevala collection, or "The Land of Heroes" arranged in a narrative poem, becoming the "national epic" of Finland.

Special publication commemorating the work (182 moral-based fables) attributed to the Greek slave, b. circa 620 B.C. on the island of Samos. Freed by his 2nd master rewarding his learning and wit, and traveled throughout Greece telling his fables. During the 14th century, a Byzantine scholar compiled them in prose. Earlier recordings had been in verse in both Greek and Roman. The Index list is by moral.

Illustrations are magnificent and imaginative. Untermeyer notes most of these events actually happened. They belong to history, mythology, folklore, told and retold (sometimes reshaped)through the centuries. They are from numerous cultures, from ancient Greece and Rome to medieval times to the age of romance. Untermeyer was awarded the Sarah Josepha Hale Award by the Richards Library Trustees here in Newport, NH, in 1965.
