Selection of 33 writer, novelist, and editor Raymond Holden's poems, his third published collection, and includes a grouping of 50 sonnets. Several of these poems had been earlier printed in magazines and newspapers, reprinted here with permission. A lifetime of diverse interests and intellectual pursuits is evident in Holden's poetry. His last decades were spent with spouse Barbara in Newport NH, where together they created the Sarah Josepha Hale Award, now in more than 50 years honoring annually a writer of importance for New England. Native to Newport, Hale became editor of Godey's Lady's Book, a widely circulated publication during the 19th century.

The title poem is from the former volume. In his prefatory note, the poet comments on his working method. The back cover portrait is an early B&W photo of the author. Kinnell won the Pulitzer and the National Book Award for his 1982 "Selected Poems". He has been a MacArthur Fellow and Vermont's Poet Laureate.

Two of his titles had been privately circulated. Contents Notes: "Born Too Late" had first appeared in Calamus in slightly different form; "Ballad of the Woodland" is revised from a broadside printing, taken out of circulation by 1966; "Norman Morrison" first appeared in different form in the Greenleaf publication.
