Description:
First edition, first printing, hardcover with dust jacket in archival cover. Classic western fiction in fabulous dust jacket. DJ is price clipped; dj has ancient paper backing. I rate the dj as only fair due to accumulated wear not major damage. Minor chips to head of spine, price clipped, flaps reinforced now protected in archival cover. Interior has new endpapers, occasional foxing but no other markings, folds, signatures, vandalism or other problems. External board hinges have dark stains. I have seen several copies of this book with the same issue and I think it is due to the black ink from the dust jacket leaking through. Please see scans of the book you will receive. Feel free to ask questions. Notes: not to be confused with book of the same name by authors Donalds or Shirreffs published in 1956.

Description:
1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

Description:
1858 first (and only) edition. Hardcover in original brown and gilt blindstamped boards. Overall condition is Good. Boards show moderate general wear, binding is sound. Interior has partially removed Sabbath School bookplate and old seller's pencil note. Missing one front blank. All else complete. Paginates: blank, 67, 2 blanks, with 16 plates included in pagination. The plates are on stiff white paper. Most pages show modest to moderate foxing. 6x4 inches. An uncommon item. None for sale, one found at auction (this copy). WorldCat locates 4 physical copies. See OCLC: 15031839. Please see images of the book you will receive. Feel free to inquire. Notes: Interest here is in the detailed vignettes which show Mom on fire, Junior getting his foot amputated, murder, shipwrecks and more. Then there are the elaborate borders which include snakes, skulls, skeletons and burning cups of fire. Introduction says this is intended for children. Definitely not at bedtime. Full leather binding is uncommon. Paginates: blank, frontis, title, (9)-548, blank. 16 color plates including the frontis. Complete as issued. First US edition, likely second printing, decorative hardcover, circa 1887/88. Identification of first editions is complicated and is partially addressed below. Overall condition is good. Boards show moderate patina, wear especially to edges and corners. Prior owner's stamp on front blank, moderate foxing to title page and last few pages of ads, occasional smudge, no tears or folds. Hinges and gutters starting but should hold with proper handling. Paginates: blanks, 384, 24, blanks plus 12 unpaginated plates. All edges gilt. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Popular British author with this title being one of his better known works. An example of early science fiction with a flying submarine. More Notes: True 1st ed. are 1887 by Blackie & Son, London with 1887 date on title page. Most US 1st edition books in this series had a date on the title page but is not the case with this title. Description:
American Tract Society pamphlet #33 circa 1855, New York. This pamphlet has inscription containing date, 1855. Numerous books and pamphlets with similar titles were produced by a variety of authors so there is understandably some confusion. I am reasonably confident this is the first American edition of this particular pamphlet. The Society frequently 'borrowed' material from the UK publishers so there may be earlier UK editions. The primary condition feature this pamphlet has going for it is that it still exists and is complete. As you can see from the images it is faded, stained, smudged and the cover is almost off. Paginates: (1)-32 pages including frontis. Notes: For those of you with bibliographic questions I suggest OCLC: 55129232 which is this exact copy but misdated (locates 2 copies). For a more complete look at dates see OCLC: 233639908 which discusses a similar item held at the American Antiquarian Society and confirms the 1855 date. Feel free to inquire. Uncommon in this early state. More… Read More

Pamphlet, 1825, Andover, Mass. Early edition. Condition is Fair: wraps show significant general wear, top outer corner of blank and last wrap missing causing loss of part a letter. Interior has ownership inscription on front blank with date of 1827, old prior seller's price on blank. No other writing or markings. Spine reinforced with paper in distant past. Paginates: wraps, blanks, 48. Illustrations included in pagination. Complete as issued. This edition is uncommon. WorldCat locates ~15 copies. See OCLC: 34635134 & 22449258; Rosenbach 681. Harlan Page is the engraver, author is unknown. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: identification of edition priority is a challenge. The undated New-York Religious Tract Society is generally considered the true first. The sources on this make conclusory statements and there is reason to doubt them. I put together a summary of my research for those who are interested.[Indigenous, South Pacific, theology]

1858 London hardcover. First edition. Volume has undergone repairs: recased using original red boards with sympathetic new leather spine; new endpapers. Interior has moderate foxing, smudges and wear but nothing vandalized. Paginates: [6], (1)-239, errata slip plus 6 unpaginated plates. Complete as issued except for blanks. Numerous engravings in text. Uncommon true first. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: although classified as fiction what the author is doing is relating facts about recent world travels in a style designed to appeal to youth. Includes instruction on use of scientific instruments by travellers - an idea adopted not long after by The Royal Geographical Society in "Hints to Travellers" - so maybe this book is not 'juvenalia' as one might be led to believe.

Description:
Pamphlet circa 1809. The wreck of the HMS Centaur in September, 1782 is a famous event with many accounts. The Centaur left Jamaica for England and sank in a hurricane. The survivors drifted for 16 days before arriving in the Azores. Twelve survived while 400 were lost. Pamphlets of this type were sometimes sold separately and sometimes bound in volumes. This item appears disbound from a larger volume but may still be regarded as complete. There is a note at bottom of page 2 "3d Ed. 17,000" making this a later printing. WorldCat locates 1 copy but it is from a different publisher. See OCLC: 751357712. Condition is Good: disbound from larger volume. Closed tear affecting pages 1-2 (see image). Paginates: (1)-12. Volume is good condition. Covers show shelf wear, binding has crack at upper end but in no danger of failing. Interior has presentation plate in front, pages are excellent with no marking or vandalism. Possibly missing a plate that would be found opposite first page of Bounty. Pagination: frontis, 1-224, 1-160. Suitable reading copy. A note about the murky origins of this volume: I believe this volume is derived from "Great Historical Mutinies" written by David Herbert and published by Nimmo in London, 1876. The Li-Quor Tea Company published an abridged version in London, 1879. The Nimmo copies have thicker paper and nicer decorative bindings.

A note about the murky origins of this volume: I believe this volume is derived from "Great Historical Mutinies" published by Nimmo in London, 1876. Nimmo published an abridged version in the 1890's in Edinburgh. This Li-Quor copy has exactly the same text as Nimmo abridged edition; the only difference being the order of the mutinies. Author is likely David Herbert who is listed as author in early editions of "Great Historical Mutinies." Please see scans of the book you will receive.
